Mt. Kalisungan (760+)

MT. KALISUNGAN
Calauan, Laguna
Jump-off point: Brgy. Lamot 2, Calauan
LLA: 14° 08.790N; 121° 20.683E; 760 MASL
Days required / Hours to summit: 1 day / 2.5-3 hours
Specs: Minor climb, Difficulty 3/9, Trail class 1-2
Article history: Created 8/14/07, last updated 01/14/13

BACKGROUND
Mt. Kalisungan In Calauan, Laguna is one of the smaller mountains in the Southern Tagalog region, but is nonetheless prominent because in many points of view, it is one of the mountains that flank the Banahaw Trilogy. Moreover, it has a special place in history as the final stand of the retreating Japanese soldiers in Laguna towards the end of World War II (1945-1946). It used to be - and still is - a mountain that has many names. Some call it Mt. Calauan or Mt. Nagcarlan after the two towns it borders; others call it Mt. Lamot because it lies in Brgy. Lamot. There is growing consensus, however, that this mountain, rising to 760 MASL, should be known as Mt. Kalisungan.

Japanese guerrillas at the twilight of World War II made Mt. Kalisungan their last stand in Laguna. Afterwards, locals erected a white cross at its peak. It has become a local Holy Week custom to climb the mountain. Throughout the year, Mt. Kalisungan receives ample rainfall, and because of its relatively rustic location, its great charm lies in its serenity. Fruit trees - from rambutan to kaimito, and of course buko - provide trail food year round, as well, but don't forget to ask permission before picking!

Verdant fields surround the slopes of Kalisungan. There are coconut trees, banana plantations, corn fields, citrus orchards, and vast grasslands leading to the summit. As one goes higher, the view becomes more distinct: directly in front of you, to the north, is Talim island with its Mt. Tagapo shaped like a young woman’s breast; you can also see Jalajala peninsula jutting into Laguna Lake like a ship, with Mt. Sembrano on its helm. Moving your eyes to east, the highlands of Caliraya appear. And once you reach the peak, you will be able to glimpse upon the seven lakes of San Pablo, flanked by Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw. Then, from a distance there is Mt. Makiling, to the west, completing the circle.

PRACTICALITIES
Getting there. Two bus lines ply the Manila-Sta. Cruz route: namely Green Star with its terminal at Buendia (LRT1: Gil Puyat) and HM Transport in EDSA-Cubao (MRT3: Cubao; LRT2: Cubao). As of January 2013, the fare is around P110-120 to reach the Duck junction in Victoria, Laguna. From the Duck Junction, take a tricycle to the barangay hall of Brgy. Lamot 2 which should cost no more than 50 pesos per ride.

Registration and guides. Take note that Erais Farms is no longer a permitted jumpoff (its owners have decided to restrict entry); hikers are asked to go further down the road to Brgy. Lamot 2. No registration fee or permit is required as of January 2013; however, locals advise hikers to register first at the Brgy. Hall of Brgy. Lamot 2. The PinoyMountaineer-recommended guide for Mt. Kalisungan is Mang Bino (+639092971437). The guide fee is 400 pesos per day.

Hiking notes. Mt. Kalisungan, being used by the locals for agriculture, has many trails and it is easy to get confused. However, the general direction of the trail is SSE. Landmarks include a nipa hut, a big mango tree, and another nipa hut before reaching the grassland slopes leading to the summit. Warning: Lots of mosquitoes!

Camping notes. Overnight camping is usually done at the summit area. Winds can be strong, so make sure tents are securely pegged. Note that there are no regular water sources in Mt. Kalisungan. Cellphone signal is present throughout the trail.

Security. Contrary to some reports, Mt. Kalisungan is very safe and there have not been reports of any incidents involving hikers since 2007.

MT. KALISUNGAN PICTURES

At the foothills, the trail is wide and surrounded by beautiful trees and plantation fields (2007).

Midway, you will encounter some dense foliage comprised of grasses, shrubs, and banana trees.

Along the trail with Ms. Agot Isidro and Coby Sarreal (Jan 2013)

The summit is meadowy and verdant: the winds are quite refreshing (2007).

A wooden cross used to mark the summit; it has since been replaced by a cement one (2007).

One of the best views at the peak is that of San Pablo's Seven Lakes - at least six of which are visible at the peak. In this picture, the lakes seen are Mohicap, Palakpakin, and Sampaloc (2007).

Aerial view of Mt. Kalisungan (lower right) shows its grassland peak, Mt. Atimla beside it, and the San Pablo's Seven Lakes (2011).

TRIVIA
The blogger first reached Mt. Kalisungan as a New Year climb in 2007 -- an accidental climb after a failed attempt to reach Mt. Tagapo from the piers of Calamba. The pictures shown are from this climb.

The blogger returned for a New Year climb in 2011, and his fresh account of the destination is narrated in Hiking matters #118.

hey ria, hi there! indeed it's mt. lamot. can you help me add more information about mt. kalisungan? i've only up there once, and my sources are quite few re. this mountain. i'll update the entry soon. thanks!

we had a fun dayhike last feb 16 08 at kalisungan. it is a relatively easy trek, no "limatik" lipa and "teka-teka" or vines to annoy you. the view is spectacular, you'll see the other side of laguna, mt makiling and the talim island....also the lakes of san pablo as mentioned in the blog.

thanks for the update sir!

Hello Gideon,

Will it be advisable to spend a night here? It's just me and my gal pal...

gideon said...

hi christine...it's possible to spend the night at the summit where there are flat clearings for tents. mind the weather though :D

Sir! Are there guides in Mt. Kalisungan? How much would it cost if ever? Or is the trail clear enough to hike without one..tnx!

Anonymous said...

additional question... kung may dalang kotse, meron ba sir parking area near jumpoff? thanks again!more power!

gideon said...

@domengzhu: wow, that must be quite an experience! your suggestions would definitely be good especially now that typhoon season's about to begin.

@anonymous: there is no organized guide service in brgy. lamot but you can ask locals to guide you. anywhere between P300-500/day is reasonable.

as for parking, you can park inside erais farms (the jumpoff). it's gated and safe. we did that last year with my pal's trooper.

hope this helps. have a nice trek guys! -gid

Sir I think they no longer allow passage through Erais. We went there last August 2008 and they pointed us to new jumpoff point, a few meters from the farm, past that giant Lamot pineapple landmark.

Taniman pa rin ata sya. Maraming banana at coconut trees.

Arayat? san baba? at how much po? may clim po kami next weekend. salamat pO!

Good day po mga Ma'am at mga Sir. :)

I would like to have more info po sana re:Mt Kalisungan po sana. My friend is suggesting for us to go back to Mt. Tarak this comiong weekend but I've been there already and I know there are still a lot of mountains to climb near Manila so I'd rather try Kalisungan then...

or if you have any more suggestions, I would appreciate wag lang po muna Mt. :)

Just a thought, does Mt.Kalisungan gets bloody muddy as worse as what we have had experienced just last weekend at Famy? It was so muddy at Famy last weekend. We might have broken the record of the longest trekking time from jump-off to Buruwisan! 6hrs ascending and 3hrs descending. :(:(:( such a shame! I was soooo careful not to soak my shoes with mud otherwise it will get heavier... :( Some were trekking barefooted already. I was also tempted to do so but I thought of those both small and big sharp rocks which goes unnoticed because it's also soked with mud..

Please, if anyone has climb Mt Kalisungan on rainy days kindly advise if the trail gets really muddy, even worse than Mt. Batulao. :(

Thanks,
Maruco

gideon said...

your experience in romelo does not happen in all mountains; romelo after all is exceptionally notorious for being muddy.

kalisungan can get slippery too, but it has a lot of grass/lowland trees to support its soil. however, the foliage gets dense esp. since not many people climb kalisungan these days.

good luck on your climb!

A friend and i climbed kalisungan last oct24.La kaming idea sa place.Kumuha lang kami ng info thru this site.We planned to camp there kaya lang sabi nung isang tindera b4 kami mgtrike my naholdup daw dun so we decided na daytrek n lang.

The trike took us to Eraes farm at dun na rin kami ngstart trek.(So pwede pa rin dun) Pede rin magstart sa Brgy lamot mismo but the trail is easier and longer accrdng to the locals.

As we were hiking my nakita kami na bata.We invited the kid ,Elmer,to accompany us.Mejo mahiyain pero nung dumaan kami sa bahay nila( his house is just along the trail) pinasama sya ng tatay nya.So my guide na kami.hehe! Hardcore si Elmer..barefooted sya the whole trek.

Established naman ang trail...walang ligaw. My isang part lang na malapit sa saginggan na dapat magturn right kayo at mejo tago at overgrown ang trail so kung dederetso instead of turning right sa brgy lamot na daw ang labas mo.after this turn, straight to the summit na..wala ng ligaw.

we descneded at 4:30 at umulan so super hirap ng trek coz maputik na madulas.di tulad sa romelo na lulubog lang ang paa mo so di ka matutumba, dun matigas ang lupa pero loose ang top soil at walang foothold so ilang beses kaming sumemplang..bale gapang mode talaga kami ng frnd ko..about 30% ng descent nakacrouch at nagslide na lg kami pababa..bale naligo kami sa putik. No choice talaga.
Rural feel talaga.

Update on Kalisungan
Ride bus from cubao hm bus, facing north edsa its on left side fare is Php 127.XX to the duck junction, from the duck ride a tricycle (our fare is 100 pesos evening) walk to the cemented path until you reach a gate where something like a word "faith" with other words accompanying this word "white gate". there is a small pathway on the right of the gate walk you will see a fork turn right that's where we started the trek. Well we really don't know if this is a good path.

We met the caretaker of the land the one who owns the mini kubo, very friendly and we followed him to all the way down. The trail going down is very muddy "daanan nangkabayo" and well can be very tricky without a guide.

From Brgy Lamot1 walk left up to the fork where jeeps bound to "Bae" pass these jeeps (8pesos) are calamba/crossing. Alight at Bae and Bus bound to cubao are passing there (caution if you are going home after 7pm don't alight at "Bae" just alidght at Calamba (jeep from bae to calamba 26 pesos) where Bus Terminals are) Bus bound to cubao from calamba 90.xx

If you get lost in this mountain and see a mini kubo with water jugs stop there and wait for the caretaker. He goes there every day and "Please dont step on flat clear lands where the caretaker plant pechay and other sort of vegetables." He said some mountaineers who gets lost camps on the plants.

If you arrive in a slope where you see a view of body of water and find yourself behind high cogons and see a path going inside the cogons, that is not the right way. You will get lost there :) as the caretaker said. If you need additional info trekking Kalisungan mail me at jmazaredo at gmail dot com will be very glad to help

hi sir gid..
been to kalinsungan last wik..
the view was spectacular up there..
pro xmpre,,bago ang view,,hirap muna s trekking..
hehhe..
we wud highly suggest n b4 climbng, mg-drop by muna s brgy hall ng calauan (just across the basketball court b4 the erais farm), pra mg-paregister (pero wlang bayad), and also, pra msmahan nren un grupo nyo s erais farm to ask permission n kun pwedeng mkidaan paakyat s bundok (c kua eric po un caretaker nun farm)..
anyway, all the way to summit sir, i was thinking how come nsbi nyong 3/9 and also, nkuha nyo ng 2.5hrs paakyat well in fact, nkkhiya man sbihin pero knuha nmen ng 5.5hrs un,puro direct assault (ng ssixty-seventy dgrees) and sobrang putek ng trail, wla tlagang mkpitan n ugat, baging, or whatsoever, so kme po..puro dausdos award ang nangyari..hheheh..
and then pgdating s taas, lupet ng view, (eventhough, sampaloc, plakpakin at mohikap lan un kita from 7lakes), cgro mga 2hours lan kme bnigyan ng clearing tpos ng zero visibilty n..kz unfortunately, bnagyo kme..hehhe..
nway, pababa n po., ntumbok nmen un mdaling trail,, everybody's laughing while saying nlang n.. "ahhh..eto un cnsbi ni sir gid n 3-out-of-9..hahhah" n wrong-turn kme dun sir ah..hahhaha..dmi po kzng trail,,pasway!!heheh..
nway..
it was still a nice climb..seeing everybody in the group was making fun of each other because of being "taong putik" and inspite of the unfortunate things we've encountered,, yet,, camaraderie and stronger bond was established in this mountain..
that's all for now sir gid.,
pls. continue this site up and running and rocking!!!hehehe..

http://www.pinoymountaineer.com/2008/11/pinoymountaineer-difficulty-scale-2009.html

the difficulty scale acknowledges that mountains can be different each day, and there are factors that can "increase" the difficulty of each mountain, with the mnemonic PULAG: precipitation, unestablished trail, low temperature, animals or noxious wildlife, and gale (winds > 50 kph)

to all our mountaineer friends,

we climb kalisungan just this weekend. we started at erais farm, si erick ang sumalubong sa grupo namin, this time me registration na po na 10 per head. pero very hospitable naman sila erick and they even told us na pagbaba pwede kaming maligo sa erais for 10 pesos din per head.
nagtagal din kami paakyat dahil sa sobrang init ng panahon. we decided to take our lunch na rin sa daanan dahil according sa mga nakasalubong naming mountaineers grabe init sa summit. after lunch we resume trek this time inulan naman kami pero sobra laking tulong ng ulan yun nga lang dami ring nadulas kasi steep na yung trail.
like what the comments here says...maganda talaga ang view sa taas. sa mga photograper panalo tyak ang bawat sulok.
ingat lang lagi sa mga ligaw na trail though we tried to leave signs along the way. but on our way down naligaw na kami and we found our group na lang sa brgy lamot. ganun din sa dulas, ingat po sa mga bato na pwde nyong bagsakan.
sa me kainan sa kamalig na kami nag post climb. panalo ang kinulob na itik nila at mabait ang banca family.dito na kami nag-clean-up at 15 per head, not bad.

enjoy ur quest guys!

Sept 5-6, 2009, we climbed Mt. Kalisungan. First climb ko ito together with MMS group. Dami kong natutunan.

Mabuti naman at safe ang climb nyo. We climbed mt Kalisungan a week ahead of you and indeed may mga mag uuling along the trail.

We had a night trek going to the summit last weekend. We started at 4:30pm and arrived at the summit/campsite before 7pm.

Two tents pitched at the summit were destroyed. OK lang kahit dome tent dala nyo, basta bring extra guy lines - sobrang helpful.

Magdala ng trekking pole kung pwede. It's very helpful when going down. matarik at maputik kasi ang daan.

Our group had a challenging, super fun and successful climb last weekend. Almost 90% of the trail are assault. You can passby at Erais Farm and look for Kuya Eric. You can also ask for a guide for a minimal fee. Night trek is also possible. Sad to see lang na sunog ang summit, it may be cause by a wild fire and sana not because of human.
The wind is strong, just bring an extra peg, if you're using Dome type tent.

Climber may also dropby at ISKARGU restaurant along the hiway after the climb. They offer a very delicious food at a very affordable price. The place is great and relaxing, you can view the summit of Mt. Kalisungan.
From Erais Farm, ride a tricyle, the fare ranges from P12-P20 per person. We really enjoyed our climb last February 27-28.

Went on a dayhike up Kalisungan last Sunday March 28, 2010. Erais Farms jumpoff is now closed. We had to take the trailhead at a nearby tree farm a few meters past Erais. Cross marker at the summit was taken down. The grasses are shorter as there were some traces of grass fires said to have been caused by a burner that malfunctioned, believed to have been thrown in panic and never disposed of properly.

good day,

me and and and a fellow mountaineer with two newbies did a dayhike up mt. kalisungan yesteday (may 8, 2010) and did a side trip to bunga falls, just an update:

bus from HM transit cubao is for Php 128.78
victoria (dunk junction, masipang) trike is for 15.00 Php

the whole experience was great! with the exception of loosing by digi cam cause of my carelessness the climb was quite easy, wheather condition was good, but still so hot, umbrella is a must for everyone planning to go up kalisungan..

a littele disappointed with how the bunga falls was commercialized, trash was everywhere.. there were videoke units around ruining the whole peace and quiet experience we we're looking for, some locals we're bathing on the water itself..

i guess this is the closest that the local can get to a party place.. we here in manila have our party clubs and i guess that their version of a place to party..

i will maybe come back..

enjoy the trails..

we climbed mt. kalisungan last sept. 10-11 2011. Maling trail pero lahat ng sinabi ng local na nakasalubong namin ay sinusunod namin pero in the end mali. dead end(kubo na meron ulingan). e camp sa dalandan plantation

if your facing mt. kalisungan, behind is mt. makiling, 10o'clock is Laguna de Bay. totally mali yun trail.
successful pa din in different way kahit hindi nakapagsummit. 6 hours trek up at 30 minutes descent

at yun ibang kasama namin na night trek meron guide at nagbutas pa ng trail.

thanks sa brgy secretary. sya yun contact namin at kasama ng mga night trek. he tried to locate us pero wala din.

sa aakyat ng kalisungan, better to have a guide. left turn sa gilid faith sanctuary.

hi sir Gid. we just climb Mt. Kalisungan last week end sept 17-18. registration in Brgy Lamot is free until this year. maraming trail going up kaya nagkandaligaw ligaw kami good thing may mga magsasaka na nag turo sa amin ng daan. may mga nakasabay kami na nag day hike at may kasama silang guide. 350 daw bayad nila for the whole group. maganda ang view sa taas, visible ang 7 lakes of san pablo. yun nga lng may daga na sa summit. sinira nila tent ng kasamahan ko....

Anonymous said...

good day sir gid at mga kabundukero,..itatanong ko lang po sana kung ilang tent ang kasya sa campsite ng kalisungan?mga ilang tent po ang kasya..balak po namin umakyat ngayong oct 2011,maraming salamat po!

nanggaling po ako dyan nitong nakaraang oct.23, i have learned na pwede naman palang mag jeep from duck junction **sakay lang ng jeep going sn.pablo, at sabihin sa driver na ibaba na lang sa bgy.hall ng lamot-2(10 php).
mas mura kung ikukumpara sa trike.

Hi sir Gid,

I'm Jeser from Calamba and this is my favorite mountain since it is cheap taking this as destination and not to metion that this is my mother mountain in mountaineering. I heard about the Mt. Atimla-Kalisungan traverse and I could not find any help or info in the net or other mountaineering friends and networks, do you have any info regarding the said?I'm so eager to try this traverse. Thank you in advance.

Re. security of the mountain as I heard about Froi, we inquired this to a family of locals who maintained the lower area banana and coconut farm(first leg til kubo)and they said that he was previously released from jail and he's back in his old habit as he is an addict. There's no such threat except him that can be avoided by having a local guide along your side. Also, regarding the confusing trail, if you use the one near Brgy. Lamot Hall, this could be confusing, we usually use the residence of the local I asked(mentioned above) few feet away from Erais and Froi's residences. (A closed store is the landmark).

More powers to all fellow montaineers.

guys, been there last nov12-13,2011, night trek with my group A.M.A.T.S.. (Amazing Mountaineers, Aimed and Trained to Summit), major major ligaw ang nangyari samen. I suggest to do the day hike, kasi marami talaga sya ligaw. Pagkatapos nung unang pahingaan na parang sabsaban dun, nagsimula na kami maligaw at ayun namwersa kami at gumawa ng sariling trail hehehe.. ang 2hrs na akyat ay naging 5hrs haha, later ng nakita namen yung trail (puro talahib) then we found out na inikutan lang namen ang bundok hehhe. KInaumagahan pagkababa namen, sobrang dali lang pala at one way lang ang trail, though maraming way at pwede daanan talaga.. naabutan pa kami ng ulan pagbaba (salamat hindi ganun kalakas) kaya sobrang putik at dulas din.. nung pag-akyat nga pala namen nung gabi, we felt na naengkanto ata kame, though sounds crazy pero totoo, naramdaman nameng may third eye that time kaya puro kami ligaw at paulet-ulet puro dead end.. Anyway, sarap sa summit as in sobra lamig, bitin ung soju na dala namen sa sobra lamig! MAsaya and worth it ang pagod! Sarado na nga pala yung sa farm, yung new trail ay yung sa may field of faith ang start.. (sa may pader, may nakasulat field of faith, then sa eskinitang yun, kaliwa..dun ang start) ingat sa pag-akyat mga fellow mountaineers.. \m/

i suggest po na wag umakyat sa kalisungan kapag naging maulan po in the past few days.. sobrang maputik po and sobrang dulas ng trail lalo na pag malapit na sa summit u nedd to hold on talahib pra lng makaakyat..

sir gideon, khit po ngayon na 1 week na wlang ulan npka maputik, we been there last nyt po, dun kmi dumaan sa kabilang trail, dun sa my tpat ng brgy hall ng brgy. lamot ung jump off, 1st kalsada, then ung train na maputik mgstart pagpsok nyu sa my gilid ng skul, dme din dumi ng kabayo,

Thanks lala for the info,

yes naakyat na namin to last Feb. 18 - 19, indeed sobra sobra pa dala namin tubig, karga ko sakin ang 8 liters ng tubig and per person samin may dalang 3-6 liters of water.

magandang simulation climb din to for heavy loading assault.

Ang bait po nila kasi they even allow us to stay in their place and even cooked us our late lunch.. hehe.. We pay for only 20php/each para sa ligo. Binigyan na lang namin ng extra tip si kuya for accommodating our big group (approx 15 pax that time). Hope this'll help.

I suggest na magpaguide dito since madaming ligaw due to many locals trail.

hello just want to share my kalisungan exp.
first time ko umakyat d2 was with my gf. sa brgy hall ng lamot kami bumaba to register pero sarado ang brgy hall kaya wala kami mapagtanungan for directions. wala ding makuhang guide. pero sabi sa site na ito dun sa tapat mismo ng brgy hall may daan kaya aun lakad2 tanong2 picture2 tapos bglang boom nawala ang trail after 1 hour or 2 na akyat. akyat n lng ng akyat. good thing my mga nag uuling na nadadaanan kaya tanong2 na dn pero ubod ng tarik ng daan at madulas dn.
after quite a walk paakyat nag merge kami bgla sa totoong trail and then suddenly cogon area na aun summit na dn afterwards. nglunch na kami dun sa summit. un na ata ang pnkamasarap ng fish fillet na natikman ko sa buhay ko sa sobrang gutom at pagod haha. kapagod kasi wala kami sa trail. napakatarik eh. ewan ko ba bat bglang nawala ang trail.
nung pababa e sa totoong trail na kami dumaan and found ourselves sa isang lugar na may bahay2, malaking mangga, may tindahan. Its a place unahan ng eraiz farm but before the brgy hall of lamot.
the second time i went there e dun na kami dumaan sa area na un kasi i heard na sarado na ang jump off sa eraiz.
very muddy ang trail esp pa summit. Its either hahawak ka sa mga cogon at matusok ng mga trichomes nito or gugulong ka pababa :) magkanda tinik2 ka man pa akyat e worth naman sa gnda ng 360 view :)
walang basura sa bundok na ito. Lets keep it that way po. have a safe climb.

Me and my friends are planning to go there next month. Ilang tents po ba kasya sa summit? May ibang campsite ba aside sa summit mismo (in case masyadong malakas ang hangin)?

Anonymous said...

look for Tony Mendoza at the Brgy Hall of Lamot. hell of a guide. hndi pa kau tatagain.

Guys... Just got back from mt. kalisungan yesterday, medyo masakit pa body ko since matagal nako hindi nakapagtrek/hike but it was worth it.. Seeing all seven lakes from my home town of San Pablo, 360 view of Laguna area and as far as Taal volcano. Kuya Vino our guide was also very helpful. I definetely would recommend this climb to all laguna locals....Bok of CTEPI

umakyat kami dito last sunday dec 2, 2012

may naghukay po sa summit ng bundok. About 15ft deep.

I did a solo climb last Sunday dec 9, 2012. I got Mang bino from the Barangay to accompany me. Paid him 300. Did the climb in 2 hours from the main road. The cross is gone but the hole is still there. According to my iPhone app, elevation is at 650 meters.

We climbed Mt. Kalisungan last Sunday. From the summit, it is really good to see the 7 lakes of San Pablo, Laguna Lake and Talim island, Mounts Tagapo, Makiling, Atimla, Cristobal, Banahaw, Malipunyo range and Maculot.

The trails has many forks, so its good that we hired a local guide who charged us P50/head.

Lesson learned? Commute na lang as much as possible kung aakyat sa Kalisungan.
