LATEST UPDATES
As of February 2013, the trail to the Rockies was closed and a new one was opened. This new trail is well marked by white arrows and signs. The difficulty and distance of the new trail is practically the same as the old one, thus no changes in the itinerary will be made.

BACKGROUND
Mt. Maculot is one of the most popular daytrip destinations. It is so popular that on weekends and summer months, there is a sari-sari store, dubbed '7-11' at the campsite. This mountain, at the heart of Batangas, is known as a landmark for locals and travelers alike; it is easily identifiable because of its abruptly terminating east side - forming a cliff that is challenging for rock climbers and breathtaking to everybody else. Others describe the shape of the mountain as 'igloo-like'.

At 930 MASL, the mountain has three destinations: the famous Rockies (706m), the summit (930m) and the Grotto (510m). These can all be covered by a traverse dayhike, but most climbers head to the Rockies, which is the reason why Maculot is the paragon of an easy hike. Only 5% of hikers pursue the traverse, but we hope more people will explore the "forested side" of the mountain.

It is understandable, though, that the Rockies is Maculot's most powerful draw. This rocky formation stands beside Taal Lake, creating a scenic view, encompassing the whole of Taal Lake including the world-famous Taal volcano; as well the plains of Batangas. From a distance looms, on opposite sides, Mt. Makiling and the Tagaytay Highlands. If you follow Batangas Bay to the South you can see Maricaban Island, and beyond that, Mindoro's Mt. Halcon. The climbing time is variable; experienced climbers can reach the Rockies in less than an hour, but on a more relaxed pace, one could take up to two or three hours. Being a very popular trail, some entrepreneurial locals would sell drinks, like buko juice, at the rest stops along the trail, which is somewhat steep.

Moreover, there is a big store, dubbed '7-11' at the campsite which marks the end of the initial trail: this store offers everything from hard drinks to halo-halo and is open on weekends and peak season days during Holy Week etc. The campsite has space for 20 tents or more, but if you are a seeker of peace and quiet on a mountain on weekends, this is probably one of the worst places to camp in, being full of people, some of whom can get rowdy and noisy well into the night, talking and drinking. On weekdays, though, Maculot is very pleasant and quiet. Also, because of its popularity, Maculot has historically been dubbed one of the mountains with the dirtiest trails and campsites - a notoriety that has since been improved by clean-up climbs and an increasingly responsible hiking culture; nonetheless, garbage remains a big problem, and has diminished the beauty of the mountain.

Arriving at the campsite coming from the jumpoff, there are two trails, the left one leads to the Rockies, five minutes away; the right one leads to the summit, which is visible and prominent the campsite. For adventure seekers wishing to maximize a day or two of hiking, Maculot has plenty to offer beyond the Rockies. From the campsite, one can continue to the peak (930 MASL) and the Grotto on the other side of the mountain.

The trail to the summit, and past it, is mostly forested, and lends a different flavor from the usual Maculot trail. Some parts of the trail may be overgrown but is not difficult to follow through the long-established trail. It takes about an hour or so to reach the summit from the Rockies, and there, 930 MASL - the second highest point in Batangas - one can see the Rockies partially surrounded by the waters of Taal Lake; and Taal Volcano too visible and you can take a peek of the Crater Lake itself.

From the very summit of Maculot, there are two trails: one that follows the trail of origin, and another than goes down right from the summit, which is also the right side of the summit, when you're turning your back from the Rockies. Follow this trail, which gets quite steep (and there are some roped segments). The forest ends where the Grotto emerges, and from the Grotto, there are stations of the cross that follow you until you reach the end of the trail. The traverse, like the regular climb, is a relatively straightforward climb, and is doable for reasonably fit individuals.

Either way - as a traverse or as a regular climb - Mt. Maculot is a very nice climb, and its popularity is understandable. This is one of our highly recommended dayhikes from Manila!

Note: This mountain can be combined with Manabu Peak for a twin dayhike. Check out the Twin Dayhikes page for more information!

SPECIAL CONCERNS
Public transportation. To get to Cuenca from Manila, you can take a Lemery-bound bus from bus terminals in Cubao (MRT3: Cubao; LRT2: Cubao) or Buendia (LRT1: Gil Puyat). As of September 2010, the bus fare is around P150-160. Travel time is approximately 2.5 hours. Alternatively, one can take a bus to Lipa, also from Cubao or Gil Puyat, then take a jeepney to Cuenca (P28). Ask the bus or jeep to drop you off at Poblacion (town center) along the highway. From there, you can either walk to the jumpoff or take a tricycle. The tricycle will detour you to the Barangay Outpost where you can register, get their contact number for security purposes, and pay a nominal fee (P10).

Private transportation. Take SLEX, then Star Tollway, take the Lipa exit and head towards Cuenca via the highway to the left. Turn right on a fork, and go straight to Cuenca Poblacion. Turn right upon reaching the market area; it is easy to ask around for where the Mountaineer's Store is. Take note that there are two jumpoffs, one for the Rockies and one for the Grotto. There is some parking spaces near the Mountaineer's Store and you can also bring your vehicle through the first kilometer of the trail. As of 2013, there have been parking spaces (for a fee) installed by the locals up to the very end of the cement road.

Guides. You can ask the Barangay Outpost for guides; sometimes, the barangay kagawads themselves offer their services. You can also ask at the Mountaineer's Store, which is at the major jumpoff. However, the trails are generally easy to follow and are safe, so in general, guides are not necessary. As of 2013, kids along the initial leg of the trail have also begun offering themselves as guides.

Camping notes. There are no permits required in Maculot and it is generally safe, even for beginners. During April weekends, however, there may be too many climbers. The Rockies is quite small and can only accommodate about 30 people.

Climbing notes. Although taking less than 10 minute, the trail from the campsite to the Rockies is very steep. Beginners must be assisted during this leg of the trip. There is a brief portion where you need to scramble up the rocks, some of which may hit you on the head if you are not careful during the ascent.

Security concerns. Mt. Maculot is generally safe, and in the past years, we've had no reports of any untoward incident involving hikers. However, since it is a popular place, there are a lot of campsite in the campsites so caution is advised.

Environmental concerns. Mt. Maculot is one of the most popular mountains in the whole Philippines, and as such it has been grossly commercialized. To reduce impact on this mountain, PinoyMountaineer suggests avoiding camping in the weekends, or minimizing group number to 15, and whenever possible, bringing down trash from the campsite. Moreover, PinoyMountaineer does not advice hikers to buy refreshments from stalls on the trails, as this would encourage further commercial activities on the mountain itself.

MT. MACULOT PICTURES
The aerial view of Mt. Maculot shows its spatial relationship to Taal Lake. (March 2012)

The scenic view at Mt. Maculot's Rockies is the mountain's most spectacular attraction. This picture was taken in February 2007.

It's me again! Same spot, same blogger, November 2011.

At the Rockies, with Ms. Agot Isidro (Feb 2012)

Views from the summit of Maculot include Taal Volcano and a glimpse of the Crater Lake within.

There are some roped segments on the descent, but this part of the trail is much easier than it looks!

TRIVIA
Batangas folk continue to tell their children that if they don't comb their hair before they sleep, "the kuto (head louse) will take them to Mt. Maculot!". Another variation of this anecdote claims that there's a giant louse that lives in Maculot. It is also said that curly-haired aborigines (Aetas) once lived in this mountain, hence it was named Maculot from "kulot", meaning curly.

There are only a few cases of hiking-related accidents in Mt. Maculot. One, involving a girl climber, was a case of falling from the Rockies in the 1990s.

Although less than 1000 MASL, Mt. Maculot can actually be seen from Puerto Galera and parts of Northern Mindoro.

As of February 2013, the blogger has climbed Mt. Maculot ten times: 1999, 2007, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 twice, and 2013. The latest seven of these hikes were narrated in Hiking matters.

Please keep the Mt. Maculot's beauty. Sobrang na-enjoy ko ang climb na yun. Ang ganda ng view from rockies. Babalik kami dun. Please po, LNT. Wag po nating pabayaan ang ating kalikasan. Salamat po..

Elow Pau!!!! Maculot. First time namin umakyat....at all, kaya mas mganda sana kung may kasama kami. Tnx!

Anonymous said...

Ingat, enjoy and God bless..
LNT po..:)

hello po... nagclimb po kmi sa Maculot last May 29-30, 2010. Naligaw po kmi and it took us 7 hours before marating ang campsite. Super assault ung ndaanan nmin na trail. Madaming bato na gumugulong. Nakarating din kmi sa "dead end". As in a big boulder of rock before us. Ung parang wla na kming mapuntahan at madaanan except to climb on that rock. Some said that they saw a girl wearing white clothes tpos ung iba naman e nakakita ng lalaki na nakaputi. The experience we had was really death defying. Tinalo pa ang Chuck Noris. ^^
But anyway, ksma tlga ang mga gnung moment sa pag akyat ng bundok and we counted that as a memorable experience.
Akyat tau!!!!!

hi,
Correct me if I'm wrong. hehe. :)
Salamat po.

Anonymous said...

MARK MY WORD...

wow..reminiscence..mt. maculot was my first climb when i started this mountaineering activities way back 2003, with my group called alay sa kalikasan at bayan - mountaineering society (AKBAY - MS) very unforgettable experience... this is where a learned how to appreciate the nature ( I can call myself now an environmentalist), the work of God,yap, those two stores where already there during that time, we call it 7-11 and mini stop, can't forget early in the morning and we were standing at the edge of the ridge that this fog is ascending from below slowy until the whole peak was covered and became zero visibiliity for quite some time.. feels like in heaven... since then I had climbed many mountains around the Phils... my tip if you want a little spice on your climb do it during rainy season... dangerous but very challenging.. be carefull though... God Bless and good luck for all the climbers.. take nothing but pictures...leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time

Sir/Maam PADI,

Reforestation projects prioritize the use of exotic tree species such as Gmelina, Acacia, Mahogany, Eucalyptus and Falcatta. They are preferred because they can be harvested in 7-8 years, compared to indigenous dipterocarp species like tanguile, apitong, lauan and yakal which take 20-25 years before they can yield harvestable commercial value. Exotic trees however consume massive water needed for their fast growth. Fruit trees planted near them hardly survive because the exotic trees have high allelopatic properties (i.e. they secrete chemicals that inhibit other plants to grow). Community members attest in Barangay Kinabuhayan in Mount Banahaw for example, a few mahogany trees planted near a creek has dried up the entire creek, an unthinkable event, the residents say since Mount Banahaw overflows with so many water tributaries for as long as they remember.

Anonymous said...

"A problem with these reforestation efforts, however, is that these exotics trees are often not particularly well-suited to the ecosystem where they are planted, being prone to disease outbreaks and characterized by higher susceptibility to extreme weather events. They also have limited value in terms of biodiversity maintenance and watershed restoration."

I think hindi pa dapat I lift yung mountain sa mga list of environmental concern... The campsite and rockies are well maintained now walang kalat ng basura ako nakita kanina nung nag traverse ako. Pero malaking improvement talaga from last year yung camp site.

I'm looking for new ways to climb Maculot.

I heard from the locals that there is a trail with jump-off at Brgy. Balagbag which goes straight to the summit (will not pass the Grotto).

I also heard there is another trail with jump-off from Brgy. Mambog.

Does anyone know these trails?

I also heard that there is a cave somewhere near the summit. Is this true? If so, then this will add a new ride to the "Mountaineers' Playground".

Also, is there a trail going to the grassland on the eastern side of the mountain? This grassland is the one visible when you are on a ride going to Cuenca. I imagine this is one side of the mountain we've never seen before.

Anonymous said...

Actually, there is a round about trail that locals says up to summit, but that is if you want pain...
If you really are mountaineers, you know the CREED. We live and abide by it! RIGHT! tama ba mga Sirs at Mam? As mountaineers we really have to inform our friends and locals as well to maintain the mountains to sustain the ecosystem.

Mga Mamus akyat tayo!

we've been in Maculot (Traverse via Grotto Trail) last 2 weeks and from Grotto to summit the common grass (talahib) are literally over you. ang hirap hanapin ng trail lalo na from summit to rockies kelangan you have leg and arm bands for protection against those talahib.

Hello sir Gid and friends,

Umakyat po kami last jan. 16, 2011. Its our 2nd climb po sa mt. Maculot, and we've noticed na malaki na yung pagkakaiba ng Maculot in terms of garbage, although may tindahan pa din sa taas. May mga nakasabay kaming mga students (fr. Ateneo i think) around 20-30 cguro sila. Naging crowded bigla sa Rockies hehehe.

Guys Lets keep up po yung Leave No Trace Policy natin. Salamat po sa inyo and More Power to Pinoymountaineer!

See you guys in the field, ingat po lage.

It was my first to climb a mountain and dito nga sa Mt.Maculot yun just yesterday with my hubby and his friends. It was an extraordinary experience.

Yep may biyahe around those times yung bus dun sa may bandang kamuning (not sure if it's jac or jam)...lapit sa timog...ako 8 am lagi ETD ko from that terminal.
Basta dalawa lng tandaan mo. mga 10-15 minutes after the 'start trek' may fork, isang trail sa kanan paakyat at isang trail sa kaliwa pababa at aahon uli. take the left downhill trail. The right side trail will lead you to the Grotto (I think). May signage naman dun...sasabihin sau na iba ang destination nito pero pede din yun papuntang campsite kaya lng mahirap at hassle sa baging!...just take note TAKE THE LEFT TRAIL.
Tas ito ang pangalawang kelangan mong tandaan. 15-20 minutes later, may fork uli. Sa mga oras na to pag sabado, mejo marami namang makakasalubong sa trail na mga locals kaya ok lng. pede magtanong...or as an extra tip, just follow the CLEAR TRAIL...pag abutin na kayo ng 3 hours na hindi naman kayo mababagal, malamang ligaw na kayo. on a day hike last december (2010), it took me just 45 minutes from the jumpoff to the campsite...

@ian: I would say "yes" pang-beginner ang mt maculot in the sense that it's not that arduous. But I wouldn't recommend doing an unguided mt maculot climb for a group of first-timers (although i would have done that). and in addition to what Kurt said, the rockies may be lovely but, there is always danger lurking in one of the rocks! so konting ingat lang in case mabuhay ang daredevil in you!

it was a really climb successful yeah!!! we been there last saturday and it was fun, soooo tiring and very exhausting nga lang talaga well since its my 1st time to climb i bet i would really probably feel that way and even kahit sinong mountaineer ang umakyat hehe but at the top of it it was a really surprising and breath taking view, what a really beutiful and blessed place, kaya naman super mega picture picture ako dun yeah!!!! di ako umakyat sa rockies as a first timer natakot tlga ako sa tarik, by the other guys in my group climbed over it, so nice may store dun so everything with my group makes our stay easier over there....it was really cold at the top of it by night and looks like na may storm pero wala naman, thank God i survived that night whew'

@jay

i am not a certified mountaineer but i do care about nature. last february 21 2011, me and my 3 friend's saw the beatiful mt. maculot. about 3-5pm in the afternoon, more mountaineer's are coming. i think about more than 100 mountaineers reach the summit on that time. in the evening, like some mountaineers doing, socials is not absent but we are so disappointed to a group because they bring firecrackers not one but two! and then they fire it when they get drunk. they don't even think that is not good. but we don't have enough strengths to complain. i am hoping for some rules must be implemented!

Buti di naman masyado makalat nun,but meron pa din kami ilan dala pababa, most of it naman basura namin. Sarap talaga sa maculot.

@anonymous asking about the cave:
the trail towards the cave is established. we found it by accident. we intended to be at the shoulder campsite but then we ended up at the cave. we didn't explore it though. the fog was so thick and the trail was so steep and muddy. from the summit, i think it's about an hour. about a minute or two from the summit, there is a fork- the one straight ahead leads to the cave, the one on the left leads to the campsite. if you would be coming from the rockies trail towards the summit, the one on your right would be the way to the summit and the one on your left would be towards the cave. just a friendly reminder, some parts of the trail towards the cave is very steep and without ropes or vegetation or rocks to hold or step on. you would find the cave on your right side. you should find the cave before the trail ends as it leads to a cliff.

1. Ano ang recommended trail for a group of 1st timers? Posible ba akyatin na walang guide? May mga tips ba kayo for the trail (without a guide)? Meron bang parte na dangerous for first timers?

3. Ano pinka-ok na oras umakyat? Plano sana namin magsimula ng mga 6AM? Better ba kung earlier or later magsimula?

Salamat sa salamat sa mga makatulong :)

Kakababa lang namin from Maculot and I can truly say that it is one great experience!

Nung una medyo nawala kami kasi mapakaraming trails na makikita since the place is used by the locals for livelihood (coconuts), kaya I recommend asking some locals to guide new hikers. :)

It is truly a wonderful experience lalo na sa bagong hiker tulad ko; nakaka-excite pa'ng mag explore ng marami pang bundok.

:)

I'm really not into mountain climbing and my size tells it all! lol! :p pero my interest on it, pagiipunan ko na din and sarili kong equipments and tomorrow will be my first climb! I'm sooo excited! The new elevation of 706 MASL reflects the consensus of GPS and altimetric measurements at the Rockies. - i think it is best to post the elevation of the summit rather than the shoulder (rockies) or any feature of the mountain and it is the accepted norm. i hope you consider my suggestion.
more power to your site!

gidyonder said...

the "norm" you mention deal with articles that pertain to mountains as a whole. however, this is an article mainly about the Rockies as endpoint, and therefore, its elevation is the one written in the title. should i decide to amend the article and make it deal with the mountain as a whole, then i will consider your suggestion.

Nice to meet nga pala ung mga umakyat kahapon...

Anonymous said...

Umakyat kami sa Mt. Maculot last Thursday despite of the heavy rains. The rockies was an amazing spot. We will definitely consider going back kapag maganda na ang panahon.

Plastics and bottles are everywhere.

For the latest update on fare and transportation:
We came from Tagaytay at sa Cavite-Batangas Boundary kami dumaan. First jeepney trip heading to Lemery is 6:00am. Every one hour may umaalis na jeep. The fare is 40.00 pesos. Just tell the driver to drop you off the next terminal heading to Cuenca, Batangas. One hour ang biyahe from Cavite-Batangas Boundary to Lemery dahil sobrang bagal ng takbo ng jeep. Then another one hour from Lemery to Cuenca at 28.00 pesos naman ang fare. Pag dating ng Cuenca, you can either walk or ride a tricycle papuntang barangay hall where you will register. The registration fee is 10.00. Make sure that you are already in Lemery around 6:00pm otherwise, mahihirapan ka na maghanap ng sasakyan. Last trip ng van and jeep is 7:00pm. Last trip ng Jam transit going to Cubao via Lipa is 8:00pm. Hope that the info that we share will help the mountaineers on their quest to Mt. Maculot...

For us to prevent the increasing garbage in campsite is to stop buying from the vendor. In the first place, we climb the mountain with sufficient food and water. We are climber and we climb with the LNT principle. What we bring up is what we bring down. If people buy something in the campsite, there is a tendency that they will leave the responsibility of the trash to the vendor. Unfortunately, the vendor just only dump those trash in the campsite. Now who's the loser? We sleep with the trash, and the vendor goes down with his profit.

Anonymous said...

(For us to prevent the increasing garbage in campsite is to stop buying from the vendor)
This is a good suggestion and must be given an deligent consideration.
I am not against vendors, actually i do not buy any of my needs from them, because it is true, i just did go climb self sufficiently as they say, and I bring down all garbage that i have in me, INCLUDING THOSE ARE NOT MINE.
depriving these people to earn money will also earn an impact to the place itself, these are actualy the locals of mountain, they will basicaly return to being a kaingeros or mag-uuling, if being a vendor will not suffice their basic needs?...these will give a bigger impact to the mountain.
Economy speaking, we actualy help them both (locals & mountains)to survived.
I say that the problem is not these vendors, If every mountaineers is disciplined enough, and follow the LNT principle there will be no traces of garbage not only in maculot but also in other mountains as well.
May mga bundok naman na walang vendors, pero makalat pa rin, these are the real issue the we must highlightened.
kung 10 times akong umakyat ng bundok and i bring down trash as twice as i bring up,then i say i've cleaned the mountain 10 times of my capacity to degrade it, and there is a significant impact however meager it will be in the long run.
i always thought that, we dont need to create a special clean-up climb, if in our every climb, we bring down trash..or if every climb is a partly clean-up climb.
so sad to think that the number of mountaineers nowadays was multiplied exponentialy... and so the trash in the mountain did also.
and i say again, the vendors may be the adding factor but aren't the real issue, but the core of this problem is for us all mountaineers to give a bit of care to every mountain we climb.
Now here's lies the crux, How many of us climbers really practice the LNT principles?

Is it true na hindi na pwede ang traverse? Balak sana namin umakyat ng November 2nd week. Thanks,

PinoyMountaineer update: The traverse trail (Rockies-Summit-Grotto) is open and safe. I just did it yesterday. However, according to some hikers, the reverse loop (Grotto-Summit-Rockies) is non-assured as some barangay officials from the Grotto side are not allowing hikers to proceed. So go ahead with the traverse but start off with the Rockies.

plengski said...

eric said...

Hi this Ericzon from Cuenca, I would like to inform that the reason why the Barangay officials are not allowing hiker to go to the otherside of Maculot(grotto) is that the its no longer a jurisdiction of Brgy.7 the Brgy. protecting Rockies. The Grotto is under the protection of Brgy. Pinagkaisahan.

Just a reminder.

@eric

so sir.. need pa po ba ng another registration sa brgy na may sakop ng grotto ara lang makapunta dun..?

tnx.

we went to mt. maculot last jan. 7-8 this year, i'm a newbie to outdoor adventure but my first climb here is really amazing kahit hindi ako nakapunta sa summit at rockies dahil sa mala-delubyong lakas ng hangin at ulan marami naman akong natutunan... 1st ang pagamit ng sir and ma'am na para kang nasa fastfood lang, 2nd ang pagbibigayan sa trail para makadaan yung bababa or aakyat, 3rd kung ano meron ka i-share mo at kung may matira ipamahagi mo sa kapwa mo hikers dahil hindi muna kelangan pababa yan 4th yung basurang nakuha namin ipinababa samin 5th yung pakikipagkapwa at pakikipagkaibigan... madalas ko madinig ang salitang "Taga-bundok o Ugaling Bundok" pero kung ganito naman ang mga ugali ng Taga-Bundok at dadalhin sa siyudad siguro hindi muna kelangan ng MMDA para magtrapik kasi walang nagmamadali sa daanan o kalsada, siguro walang magugutom kasi marunong lahat mag-share kung ano meron at sobra, siguro walang krimen kasi lahat marunong makipag-kapwa tao... lahat ng natutunan ko sa unang akyat ko dadalhin ko maging sa susunod na bundok, gubat o siyudad... sana lahat tayo dalhin natin ang Ugaling bundok sa siyudad.. next adventure Mt. Cristobal wish me luck guys, i think madadalas ako umakyat kapag may free time ako. mabuhay po lahat ng namumundok and more power sir gids napaka-helpful po na site nyo...
