BACKGROUND
Rising above Baguio City, the "Summer Capital" of the Philippines, is Mt. Sto. Tomas. Being the highest point in Baguio, it affords an excellent view of city, the surrounding towns, La Union (SW), and even Lingayen Gulf opening out to South China Sea (S). Travellers to Baguio, resting at the last stopever at Sison, La Union, can catch a glimpse of this mountain, shaped in the fashion of Mt. Amuyao. It serves as the southwestern entrance to the Cordilleras in the same way that Mt. Ugu does in the southeast.
In nearby Mt. Cabuyao, just two kilometers away, two disc-shaped radiotransmitters were set up, comprising a famous landmark in Baguio City known as "Ra-dar". Locals quip that these dishes are actually two giant electric fans that are responsible for Baguio's refreshingly cool weather. At 2025 MASL, Mt. Cabuyao is also a great viewpoint, and is part of the trail going to the summit of Mt. Sto. Tomas. Cognizant of its strategic location, institutions ranging from the US Army decades ago to the television and cellphone companies of today have installed radio towers and transmitters in the area. Like Mt. Timbak (Singakalsa), Mt. Sto. Tomas is inhabited by locals; there are houses, schools, and vegetable patches. It is a quaint place whose bucolic air mingles with the modern feel of the towers.
The trail to Mts. Cabuyao and Sto. Tomas is easy. This can be modified to both extremes: some would even jog all the way from Burnham Park to the summit of Mt. Sto. Tomas, while others would take their vechicles through the rough road all the way up. Typically, however, hikers would take a jeepney or drive to Green Valley (passing by Marcos Highway), then walk the rough road ~5kms up to Mt. Cabuyao (there are shortcut trails, though). Atop Mt. Cabuyao, aside from the two dishes, attractions include the vegetable terraces and a view of Baguio City and the mountains on the central axis of the Cordilleras. Indeed, on a clear day, even along the trail, you can appreciate four of the five highest mountains in the Philippines, forming a line (from left: Singakalsa, Tabayoc, Panotoan, and Pulag). Then turning your eyes rightward would lead to Mt. Ugu (E). Also you can appreciate the landmarks of Baguio City, inlcuding the Philippine Military Academy, Loakan Airport, SM City Baguio, among others. There are stores serving cold drinks and snacks in Mt. Cabuyao. There are also some newly-constructed pilgrimage sites.
Other, longer trails exist for both Mt. Cabuyao and mt. Sto. Tomas, and this destination is also perfect for mountain bikers who can actually bike all the way to the summit. Even tourists visiting Baguio City can check out this place for a refreshing view of Baguio City. Don't forget to ask for the strawberries!

1030 Start descent
1300 Back at jump-off; return to Baguio City

SPECIAL CONCERNS
No permit is necessary for hiking in Mt. Sto. Tomas. If you are already in Baguio City, all you need to spend are your snacks and the jeepney fare to Green Valley (P12.50). Still, on a summer, apply sun protection since there is not much cover in the trails. During rainy season or rainy days, the roads get muddy and it might not be as enjoyable since the views would also be obscured. Hence summer is the best time to visit this destination.
It is possible to camp in the area although it is really best done as a daytrip, or a sidetrip in one of the major Cordillera climbs. Since it is a communications site, cellphone signal is strong throughout the trail.
Guides are not necessary in this trek. Turn right on the two junctions in the trail. If in doubt, just ask the locals. You may also want to hitch rides going up or down as several private vehicles take the road as well.
MT. STO TOMAS PICTURES

Towers line the trail from Mt. Cabuyao to Mt. Sto. Tomas. Take note of Mt. Sto. Tomas at the background, with its several peaks.

Mt. Cabuyao and its twin radars are about to be engulfed by clouds; picture taken along the trail up Mt. Sto. Tomas.
TRIVIA
Mt. Cabuyao is the perfect place to buy strawberries! Locals here plant the luscious berries without pesticides, and they sell it cheaper than the Baguio market princes. The blogger and his Outdoor Society companions munched on these fresh strawberries after their daytrip on April 18, 2008.

Hi sir Gideon, just want to ask, kung gaano katagal from Baguio City to the Peak of Mt. Sto thomas and Mt. Cabuyao :) Thanks po!
from baguio city you can take an FX all the way to mt. cabuyao. should take about 30 minutes. for the rest of the time intervals, refer to the posted itinerary ^^
Thanks Sir Gid! :)
Hi sir Gideon, meron po bang jeeps papuntang jump-off ng Mt. Sto. Thomas? Thanks!
yes, there are jeeps bound for green valley and beyond from the city proper -- around P15 ata yung fare. but i prefer to take the taxi nlng since its much more convenient (cost effective too if you're a group of four)
Hi sir Gideon san po ung sakayan ng jeep papuntang Green Valley? diretso po ba green valley jump-off pag nag jeep ako sir? thanks sir Gid.
Sir Gideon...is it allowed to pitch tent or to set a camp for an overnight at the peak? is there a campsite at the peak...
thanks and mabuhay ka!

Great pic of the antennas at Mt. Cabuyao, however they were not used for radar. I know because I was the site manager for the USAF Mt. Cabuyao Comunications Relay, 1978-1980 they were actually a wideband tropospheric scatter radio link to Juzon Mt. Taiwan connecting US military facilities in the Philippines to other facilities in Taiwan and beyond in Japan and South Korea.
thanks for posting this! :)
aw adi
sir...been reading your blog roughly two months ago, not a mountaineer but i just recently discovered a love for mountains...started out last yr reading the himalayas and an interest suddenly came up; so i thought why not read mountains here in the country, peaks that i can realistically climb someday; found your site and i have been visiting it mon-fri from work (keep it bet you and me; i've day hiked only 2 mountains in my life, mt malindig and mt samat, just small ones; but back then i was just climbing and going along w/ friends; anyway, teh real question is, if you just say green valley, would the driver already know where to take you?
Hi Gideon,
Nice website. After viewing your photos, one of them had to be taken from the family property we own, by the weather burea, Pag-asa. Actually the Pag-asa is built on our property. We have seen many hikers over the years, and most are polite & courteous. We could connect you with our family in Baguio, whom look after the property, should you wish to have a closer look from the summit, one day.
Regards,
Fely

Just been to Cabuyao-Sto. Tomas on a dayhike turned night trek last August 29, 2009. True to it's posted IT, 2 hours ang paCabuyao on a "walk in the park" pace. Going there, you can ride a jeep to Green Valley (behind Caltex station near bayanihan?) that will take you to Police Station jumpoff, or take the jeep that goes all the way up to Cabuyao (i didnt know there is one). If you will notice paakyat, me marka ng landslide yung mountain wall both papunta ng Cabuyao at paakyat ng Sto Tomas. Cabuyao-Mt. Sto Tomas, be observant sa trail. We also would like to thank yung mababait na tao sa towers sa summit, especially for offering a night stay (ABS-CBN man) and dun sa nagpahiram ng cabin nya habang nagpreprepare kaming sumagupa sa downpour pababa (GMA man). Salamat din dun sa mabait na pulis who let us use their facilities.

"ampaw" yung lupa ng mountainwall meaning very loose.
BPS
Couple of stretches are now cemented. Takes away the mystique of the mountain. Wish they could have just maintained it as a gravel road. It won't be long that motor vehicles and motor bikes will be going up, noise and smoke-belchers all.
hi sir, nakarating kmi sa mt. cabuyao and mt. sto tomas with my friend nissan patrol last sunday oct 18,2009, medyo okey na rin ang daan pero may road pa na inaayos dahil sa landslide, sayang namiss namin ang view because of heavy foggy at that time in the afternoon though anyway it was a nice trip to the trail of the two highest mountain peak of Benguetprovince, thank you

Though ravaged by forest fires, the single-track trail from Camp 6 in Tuba is still a good alternative -- about two to three hours to the Kabuyao summit starting from the pedestrian hanging bridge beside Kennon Road. The North Face used this trail for part of its TNF100 Baguio trail race last weekend.

hi,
me and my comrades went up there for a hike, luckily it did not rained...nice view and the locals are vey kind and approachable, we even manage to hitchhike with one of the local jeepneys as we go up..
madami po kasi transmitter dun may telecom may tv,,, im not familiar for the exact height ung sa ABS-CBN 30.48 meters/ 100ft, ung ibang tower ganun din naglalaro sa 100-150 feet...
hi gideon...my name is christian and i am part of a pioneer group working to launch Tuba Benguet ( where Mt. Kabuyao, Mt. Santo Tomas etc are found) as a tourist destination. however, we are working with no funds at all. i have been reading this blog and i find it very informative (since i've never been to the two mountains as of now). before we will be starting our campaign, we will go to check all tourist destinations in Tuba. i was just approached last week for this project. sir, someday, i will be needing your assistance for this project. our project basically is to flood the internet with information about the place so that people will learn about these places and be guided. thanks for the article and i will keep in touch to your blog...if you have time, please e-mail me at christianaligo@yahoo.com
i think you forgot to mention sir ung side trek sa burial cave and bedrock sa mt. cabuyao.. for the mountaineers who wish to climb mt. cabuyao, paalala lng po ung hiker's creed. medyo nauubos na po kase mga remains sa burial cave, let us preserve these skeletons.. it would be a great respect also if before entering, leave an "atang" as a sign of respect for the anitos dwelling in the mountain.. thanxalot----

I am curious if you have been here recently. Me and my wife life here in Baguio and we have now climbed Santo Tomas for the second time and never found the cross at the summit. There is now a "do not enter" hardhat area at the top which looks like they are building more towers. We were tempted to go through as it was the weekend and there were no workers but we didn't out of respect. I'm just wondering if we actually made it to the summit or if it is even possible to get to the summit now. I think people should know about this because they may end up disappointed (just like me and my wife were) when they find this construction zone. We intend on climbing ST every month so I'll give you an update if and when they are finished with their construction.
nagpunta kami last Feb. 25, 2013. very nice view. ang sarap ng feeling na nasa taas ka at malawak ang makikita mo.
