PinoyMountaineer recommends the classification of Philippine mountains according to difficulty with a numeric scale of 1-9 with the purpose of guiding enabling hikers to prepare accordingly. There are limitations to the criteria, and the PULAG factors listed below will try to account for some of these. The Difficulty scale is subject to continuous re-evaluation.
DISCLAIMER: Even though I am making this attempt to objectify the scale, I am aware that rating a mountain's difficulty is inherently subjective; the actual experience of difficulty depends on the situation (i.e. season, weather) and individual factors. This scale is meant only as a guide and cannot be the sole basis of an evaluating a mountain.
*The PULAG factors add +1 to the difficulty of the trek:
P- Precipitation > 50% of trek time
U- Unestablished trail or flooded trails requiring water-crossing
L- Low temperature; <> 35 C)
A- Animals or wildlife that interfere with trek (i.e. hyperlimatik)
G- Gusts of wind reaching >50kph

kudos for this sir gid! we have been using the difficulty scale since last year ,,,its good to see its detailed.
kazan
calapan, mindoro oriental
Is this the Mt Kalatungan in Bukidnon? If it is, IMHO I don't think it qualifies as Class 9. I climbed it last year, and I could say that it I find it much easier than Mt Apo. I also didnt find any parts that may hinder the smumitability of the mountain.
i agree. sir gid maybe you were referring to another mountain or trail in the kalatungan range?
I am assuming that it was at class 9 specifically summability non-assured is because I heard that there are many group of climbers that already been lost out of trail going to summit and some just go back... I actually heard 4 groups who tell stories that they failed to summit
the traverse of kalatungan is at least difficulty 7 or 8, but because of its non-assured summitability and tendency to assume some of the PULAG factors, it has been given a difficulty of 9 in this edition of the scale.
however, dissenting opinions are healthy and as i said, we can modify the ratings of each mountain if such action is supported by consensus. hopefully through these, we can create a relative but objective scale. by expanding the scale to 9, we have already stratified mountains in a more descriptive scale compared to the old itineraries wherein both banahaw and halcon are Level III.

Sir ano'ng level ang PICO de Loro sa Cavite? wala cya sa listahan eh. Curious lang po'.. thanks
kindly look up the difficulty rating of each mountain on the individual page for each mountain. the mountains posted here are just "representatives" of each difficulty rating.
i think pico de loro is difficulty 3/9.
i agree sir Gid, that pico difficulty is 3/9 depending also if it is traverse, and using traditional trail going to summit or the new trail going to saddle camp site near the summit.

Kanlaon guide, and a nursing student at the same time from St. La Salle university Bacolod.Im a regular climber, visiting Kanlaon,3-4 times a year.My very important advocacy is tree-planting and cleaning of Kanlaon's trail, setting it free from garbages which our other buddies consciously left behind.I just wannat invite any of you who are willing to join me and my other friends, this coming December 18.The trail will be at Pula.First night will be spend at WESCA,where you can find the biggest tree in the Philippines.Starts the climb at 5,the nextmorning.Estimated time of arrival at the summit will be around 12 in the afternoon.Camp one more night at Mt. Makawiwili, and go down the next day, then enjoy the waterfalls before heading back home.Any interested parties just contact me at 09054405123 for globe users, and 09087670607 for smart. Thanks a lot and let's together protect the Philippine mountains so we could deliver it safely to our future generation.

Are the three peaks of Panay Island in Western Visayas already rated? Namely Mt. Madjaas, Mt. Nangtud and Mt. Baloy. Would appreciate the info.
Those are the 3 mighty mountains of antique.
1. Mt Baloy (mahirap pa sa amuyao trav)
2. Mt Madia-as trav (mas mahirap sa baloy kahit di traverse)
3. Mt Nangtud trav (mas mahirap sa Madia-as traverse)
hi sir gid,
what mountain can you recommend as a training climb in preparation for Mt. Mantalingajan? aside from mt halcon and guiting, since based on your reviews, it has difficulty level of 9/9.
