Mt. Banahaw still closed / Mt. Cristobal still open

This morning I spoke with Ms. Sally Pangan, Park Superintendent (DENR PASU) upon whose jurisdiction Mt. Banahaw and Mt. Cristobal falls under. We discussed the status of the mountains, the prospects for reopening. Here is the gist of our conversation:

The five-year closure order of Mt. Banahaw was enacted in 2004. Doesn't that mean that we can expect a Banahaw reopening this year?
No. The reckoning is different...this year would just be the fifth year of the order. We will reopen after the five years, that means we can only do so in 2010. Prior to that, feasibility studies will be done and the carrying capacity of the mountain will have to be determined.

But between then and now, your office issued permits to climb. In fact, the current knowledge of many mountaineers is by going to Pagbilao, they can get a permit.
Yes, we issued permits for clean-up climbs up Banahaw. You see, some areas along the Cristalino trail still had a lot of garbage, covered very thinly by soil. We have determined these to antedate the closure order. Of course, the climbers went to the summit na rin; from Kapatagan it is quite close anyway.

So, no permits will be issued for now?
Yes. My superiors told me na wag na muna, especially with the studies under way.

What is the extent of the closure order?
Cristalino and Tatlong Tangke trails are closed; so is the trail from Sariaya, what is known as "Ilalim". Moreover, last year, a moratorium was passed that includes the Tayabas trail. For this naman, the reason is different: it is due to treasure hunting activity in the area.

What about Mt. Cristobal?
Cristobal is wide open. But we would like climbers to coordinate with us pa rin sana. Look at what happened last year, there were those who got lost and we had no idea how to help them, not knowing their background and itinerary.

Thank you very much. Please let us know if there are updates.
Yes, I will coordinate with you through email or text if there are changes in the status. Thank you!

The updates we got from this conversation will be reflected in the "Closed mountains" bulletin and the Mt. Banahaw page in PinoyMountaineer.com

hi wowoo,

for your safety, it is still better to register sa cristobal. no permit necessary. you can ask the locals kung saan nagreregister. make it a habit na magregister in any mountain that you will climb.

Cristobal. As mentioned sa mga comments nyo may permit pa pala to get there. Pls. enlighten us. Mga 70 person kami.

gideon said...

as stated in the article, banahaw is still closed however there are other sights in the mtns such as caves, waterfalls, shrines, that are still open.

gideon said...

please avoid questions regarding the open/closed status of banahaw. the article clearly states: "Banahaw still closed / Cristobal still open"

we will update when there are changes.

and problema sa mga bantay banahaw eh di pinapansin ang mga umaakyat papunta 3 tangke tapos pag andun na at nagset-up ng tent saka sasabihin n bawal....ang siste pa eh igaguide pababa ng mga bantay banahaw tapos dadalin sa denr at pangangaralan... suppose to be dapat pati paanan sarahan na rin at maglagay ng big big sign n no climbing allowed!!! yung ibang bantay banahaw eh pasikat lang...at pa photo op lang....

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

They will close this for hiking for another 5 years due to trash and neglect. You filipinos really need to care about where your trash goes, you are making your country look disgusting.

Anonymous said...

thanks!

To All,

As stated above,it is still 'CLOSED'.

But some got their permits in advanced, why?simple, pinoy eh.Tigas ulo natin, kung anu ung bawal un ang ginagawa.
Banahaw's closing was to sustain & preserve more whats inside it.At least, give this mountain a break. As we urged to climb and pass it to fellow climbers, the more it is unrest.
Just think of it,this mountain has been favorite climbed generation from generation.

be responsible in either way! gudluck!

With all respect, but this is the wrong kind of environmental protection. It seems the officials have lost their sense for proportion.
Obviously the rural population, because of lack of employment opportunities people snare trap killing all game, log, charcoal and at the end of the process burn the forest down on the mountain in that order. Just look up the deforestation rate in the Philippines, which is around 2%.
So when there are tourists come and litter all over trails only the trail is affected. This is neglectable in comparison of the whole forest area you have around the moutain and they provide albeit small an employment opportunity to for the rural folks.

It saddens me that the officials drive away tourists eco or not from the beautiful wilderness areas of the Philippines.

FOR : Ms. Sally Pangan, Park Superintendent
(DENR PASU)
SUBJECT : Mt.Banahaw as Closed Mountain

FROM : Mountaineers

DATE : October 28, 2009

1. Reference :a. As per observation and verbal
description of anonymous
mountaineer dated October 28,2009
b. verbal description of the
local guide dated October 25, 2009

2.Please be informed that we climbed Mt. In the summit there were lots of garbage(durungawan 1).We encountered aka(3 local climbers)in the peak, un pala kumukuha ng mga sanga ng unique tree species sa peak para pang gamot(ALBULARYO) When we are descending bound to Tatlong Tangke we encountered 4 armed men hiding in big trees, kala namin mga leftist, un pala mga hunters ng ibon na dumadapo sa balete tree..@##$% What the H#@L the local/national government do? Hoy!! They keep banning the mountaineers? While they could not kick the eggs of those real mc COy destroying the so called sacred mountain.
3. For information.

Anonymous said...

please not the lousy math again 2004-05, 05-06, 06-07, 07-08,08-2009, di ba 5years n yun. sbihin nyo nlng extend nyo closure kc di p tpos rehab if any

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

kc mga sir ang rehabilitation na mt. banhaw ay thru in self. it means ndi pakikialaman ng tao. all the diversity ng banahaw ay sa kanyang pagbabago lng, cristobal is always there naman, at sana pati ung katabing bundok wag din nating dumihan. baka ndi na devil's mountain ang tawag dun maging dirties mountain na ang cristobal. ndi the na enkanto or maligno ang dapat katakutan dun, kundi ang basurang mahahagip ng camera nyo

Anonymous said...

the last time i saw reports on the illegal logging and illegal mining. so, i dont know what the DENRs doing there!.. actually it was exposed few days before the closure. and if the rehabilitation took for 5 years, then, it was not due to "basura". i know mountaineers will cooperate if only the DENR will work for the clean-up project. pustahan p tyo, one month is good enough to clean up the mess basta mgsamasama mga banahaw concerned mountaineers? dba mga mountaineers?!
aminin nyo na mga tga DENR kyo! na ang sumira sa banahaw ay illegal loggers at miners! wag nyo i blame sa mountaineers! imaginine nyo kung gano kalaki ang radius ng bundok at kung gano kaliit ng trail na dadaanan at maoocupy ng mga mountaineers? huh! mga mountaineers, i guess its about time to speak out and we clean up the mess na itinatago ng DENR. or else, mwawala n ng tuluyan s public ang Banahaw!..

Anonymous said...

bakit laging mountaineer ang nagiging excuse to cover up their mess?

Migo Loyd said...

Sir Gids,

Is Ms. Sally Pangan still the Park Superintendent in charge of Mt. Banahaw? My group is planning to hold a clean up drive up the mountain next month. We would like to check with the PaSu if we can secure special permits for this activity. really appreciate if you can provide us with her contact details. Thank you very much!

Anonymous said...

sir/mam

Anonymous said...

Banahaw.

Anonymous said...

Congress should come up with legislation on the conservation of mountains, and limitations of outdoor activities therein. I hope the MFPI would spearhead the lobbying of this.

Anonymous said...

the real story bout banahaw? is this ive been there for 15 years kaya alam ko ang punot dulo kaya sinara, dun sa unang kapatagan na sinasabi papuntang unang durungawan nagkaroon ng pagtatalo ang mga NPA at mga sundalo na nauwi sa patayan simula noon madami pang bangkay ang di nakikita na ibinaon sa nasabing bundok.... kaya ayaw nilang magpaakyat sa kadahilanang baka my makakita sa mga nwawalang bangkay at baka makakita pa ng mga evidence na basyo ng bala dun sa naturang pahingahan ng mga umaakyat.... sad to say pero un ang totoo

Anonymous said...

rassel soriano said...

Anonymous said...

we need to stand a group to re open the banahaw again this is ridiculus,,,,sad to say marumi???? hindi ito basihan para isara ng matagal ang banahaw kailangan buksan ito ulit,,anu nga ba ang dahilan, mag karoon naman kayu ng concern sa mountaineers..this is my number we need to continue to climb as a good mountaineers! (09499236700)

Anonymous said...

^

Anonymous said...

bukas naman ang mt. banahaw basta meron ka permit kuno etc.. ekek. sariaya, candelaria at laguna trail ang daan now ng mt. banahaw. hindi galing kay mam sally ng pasu pagbilao ang permit para maka climb sa mt. banahaw. sarado pa rin ang mt. banahaw in legal order of DENR pero pede ka naman climb at your own risk...

to avoid hassle meron naman mt. cristobal, mt. tayabas peak at lucban de banahaw. no permit sa cristobal pero sa tayabas peak you need to get permit kay mam sally of pasu pagbilao at sa lucban de banahaw naman sa slpu university ata name ng skul sa lucban quezon.

lets keep in mind na pera na ang labanan now ng mountain climbing dito sa pinas. ok lang kung maliit lang ang price ng guide fee pero ginagawa ng hanap buhai ng ibang tao. only DENR can control this nothing else not mfpi or fimo etc...

Lester said...

Ive been there last june of 2009, and I climbed with my friends with our own risk, we were guided by a member of what they call "namamanata".. He guided us up to the "unang dungaw". And still we've seen many people climbing, including the barangay tanods.. I think the DENR should open this beautiful mountain to the public and see its wonderful ecosystem and beautiful views.. I also think na rehabilitated na ang banahaw, and its ready to welcome responsible mountaineers.. Or we can suggest that only mountaineers who has registered mountaineering teams or groups should be allowed to enter.. well its only a suggestion.. think about it.. =))

Anyway, sa mga aakyat, inform nyo naman ako and need friends na rin sa pag explore, 3 couples lang kami, first time sa Banahaw, sa Batangas kami magmumula and walang idea sa pagpunta, here is my number, 0927-786-2739, and sa mga mountaineers, try nyo itong province ni lola ko, MT. Napulak, Igcabugao, sa iloilo yan and MT. Maculot sa Cuenca,Batangas. Thanks
