UPDATE 5 (9/8/08 150oH): Contrary to rumors that are prevalent even within Brgy. Pundaquit, Anna and Jessielou Capili have not be found as of the moment.
UPDATE 4 (9/4/09 1700H): Still no news on the missing persons. According to our contacts, unfortunately, "it is highly probable that the two (Anna and Jessielou Capili) are lost at sea already."
UPDATE 3 (9/3/09 1500H): The third SAR team from UPM is on the way back to Manila, with the coastal search yielding negative results. A UPM report forwarded to us says that "It is highly possible that the 2 are already out in open waters." Our contacts in Brgy. Pundaquit likewise have no news. Unfortunately, we may have to prepare for the worst in this incident; continue to pray with and for the families; and hope (and act) that this incident will not happen a third time. (Courtesy of Fish, UPM; Messrs. Almario and Romeo from Brgy. Pundaquit)
UPDATE 2 (9/2/09 2200H): according to the UPM team that is part of the ongoing search and rescue (SAR) operations, the search is still negative. Two teams, one scouring the waters from Subic Bay to Anawangin, and the other from Porac, Pampanga have so far not sighted the missing persons. The SAR will resume tomorrow. (Courtesy of Fish, UPM)
UPDATE 1 (9/2/09 1300H): i just talked over the phone with our contacts in brgy. pundaquit. as of now (Sept. 2 1 PM), the missing mountaineers have not yet been found. i will post updates as soon as i get them - GID
LOS BANOS, LAGUNA - We enter this week with another incident- that of two mountain climbers missing in Mt. Pundaquit as they were descending from the Anawangin Cove-Pundaquit trail on Saturday evening amid inclement weather. According to the report from the ABS-CBN website, the two mountaineers were Anna Capili, 30, and her 13-year-old relative Jessielou Capili. The group they were part of hailed from Sta. Maria, Bulacan.
In circumstances reminiscent of last year's tragedy that claimed the lives of three mountaineers, the two missing trekkers were swept by strong river currents as they were heading back to Brgy. Pundaquit. Several accounts have now been posted on the Internet about how difficult the conditions were in Pundaquit on that weekend.
Please update us if you get wind of more developments in this incident. You may also contact the UP Mountaineers directly as they are involved in the Search and Rescue Operations (join@upmountaineers.org). We remain hopeful. Meanwhile, let us pray for the safety and comfort of the missing mountaineers, their teammates, and their family.

Good thing na puro disaster happened when we were going to San Antonio that day (nahuli yung mga kasama ko sa subic, naflatan ng gulong etc.). Andun kami sa Anawangin nung nangyari to. We were planning to trek going to Anawangin Cove pero hindi na natuloy dahil sa late na nga kami. Buti nalang!! Sobrang lakas talaga ng ulan at first then there goes the water. We enjoyed anyway that night.
Before we went home nakakita pa kami ng Pump Boat ng Philippine Navy and as per Kuya Randy nga they are searching for them kase umabot na sa Munisipyo yung news regarding them. Let us continue to pray for them.

please warn all na if rainy seasons ay wag na pumunta sa anawangin, malakas din ang alon at napaka delikado ng ilog not only in anawangin halos lahat na ng ilog sa zambales.
we are also in nagsasa last week end, pero nagtrek kami papunta.halos pareho lang din ng trail sa pundaquit.but we see na masmaraming flash flood prone sa area to nagsasa. mga 2pm saturday nagstart na ng ulan all the way na un hanggang madaling araw.ang plano namin is trek balikan, pero sa nakita naming ulan at lumindol pa daw nung mga around 2am sunday sa nagsasa kasabay ng malakas na buhos ng ulan.we decided na magbangka na lang kahit na malaki ang alon to subic, "lakasan ng loob sabi ng bangkero", mauubusan pa kami ng gas, mabuti na lang may malapit na bario halfway, then after 4 na oras na magulong byahe.nakadaong rin
i just want to share..our group YABAGmc is based in Zambales Area. so please anticipate. if you're planning to climb in Zambales with rivers, you have to be prepare.kung maari pagmaulan wag na magtapang tapangan, mas mabuti pang ma istranded na lang kaysa sumuong sa mga ilog, kung wala kayong pangrivercrossing at kaalaman.
Yabagmc
i also want to share our nagsasa adventure last week end

UPDATE: i just talked over the phone with our contacts in brgy. pundaquit. as of now (Sept. 2 1 PM), the missing persons have not yet been found. will post updates as soon as i get them.
We went trekking that day (August 29, 2009 - Saturday) in mt pundaquit going to anawangin cove. we're 29 in the group.
antirik ng araw (12nn) nung umalis kami from jump off. by 3'oclock biglang buhos ang ulan buti nalang we're just minutes
away from the top. ganda ng view... kitang kita na namin ang anawangin beach (mejo sunny pa dun sa area na un). nung pababa
na kami mejo tumila ung ulan. nag hintayan kami sa may ilog kasi malapit na daw kami sa campsite. the (2) leaders of the
group stayed dun sa ilog to wait for the other 8 na nasa bundok pa while ung first batch went on to follow the trail.just a
few minutes after namin lumakad biglang taas ung tubig, the trail were washed off. then suddenly we found ourselves trapped
in an islet surrounded by the rising river. lumakas pa lalo ang ulan that's about past 5 in the afternoon! parang may bagyo
e kasi daming kidlat at kulog. 19 kaming andun. natakot kami nung naramdaman namin nasa paanan na namin ung tubig, we moved
to a higher ground but then ayan na naman ung tubig but we didnt panicked but rather stayed calm and focused. inabutan na kami ng dilim buti nlang we have raincoats and flashlights. our guys were constantly calming us down, asking from time to time kung kaya pa namin ang ginaw. dun namin naranasang sumigaw ng tulong
in the middle of a forest na miracle nalang kung may makakarinig at tutulong samen. i even remember telling my friends to
climb the pine trees pag umangat na ng hanggang tuhod ung tubig. we silently prayed and ask for God's miracle. mga 9pm, 2
locals were roaming the place. narinig at nakita kami. finally,,, a miracle! pero kelangan pa namin tumawid ng 2 pang rumaragasang ilog para makarating sa campsite. ung pangalawang river ang mas nakakatakot dahil kinailangan pa nila ng lubid sa sobrang lakas ng agos. lampas bewang ang taas. we have no choice but to be brave enough and cross the deadly river. nakarating din kami sa campsite, safe, sa wakas then after 10mins dumating din ung 8 na nahuli, they took a different trail naman kasi may nakasabay silang isang group na may guide. by 3am ayan nanaman ang ulan, the waves were very scary. pumapasok ung tubig sa tent, but in short nakatulog pa din kami kahit basa. we just prayed na hindi mag tidal wave or umabot ung wave samen. lumipas ang gabi na hindi dumating ung 2 na naghintay sa walo. by 9am in the morning, finally they came back alive!!!
nung pauwi we just chose to take the boat instead of trekking again. as our boat took off, a smaller boat turned upside
down, throwing all its passengers to the furious waves! luckily, they were washed off to the shore safely including the
baby. grabeng sobrang lakas ng alon, kulang pa naman ng life jacket ung boat namin. isa ako dun sa walang life jacket kaya
sobra din ulit dasal ko. ung isang boat naman ng mga kasama ko nasiraan ng motor at the middle of the sea. ung boat pa naman
nila is smaller. kaya lalo silang natakot. pag dating namin sa land we celebrated our 2nd life but we were saddened by the
news na may missing nga. but we're happy na walang nadisgrasya sa grupo namin dahil kung hindi.... hindi lang dalawa ang
missing ngaun.
nakakatuwa ung mga itlog na dala namin, they also survived! hindi sila nabasag. un nga lang ginawa na namin silang scrambled
eggs! 10 of us including me were first-timers, and this trek made us realized a lot of things about life, survival and
nature. this is one of the most scariest moments of my life.
Buti naman po.
Oh my God..that August 29 recount by anonymous left me stunned for a few moments.
Sir Gid, please keep up posted about the developments. Lets pray for the younger one to be found soon... In case there's anything we can do, call out to us through the blog.
To our fellow mountaineers, caution and prayers..

Hi All,
In case you have contacts in Northern Zambales and Pangasinan, please inform them to be on a lookout for two females, one wearing a white shirt and orange shorts, the other (around 5'8", slim built) wearing a blue backless swimsuit and demim shorts.
Based on the current in the area (and what happened last year), the most probable direction they would be taken is northward. Hopefully the current would bring them to land.
Any (verifiable) information would be most helpful. You may send it to join@upmountaineers.org.ph or 09189375816
Thank you
sa lhat ng kpatid nting mountaineers, pls PRAY 4 dem!! sana mkauwi cla ng maayos... alam kong ndi cla pbbyaan ni bro. sir gid, keep on updating! tnx...

if there is any help I can give aside from prayers, let me know...

Nothing so spectacular about the place really. But one thing i really wont forget. The conditions there are extreme. Its super hot when its sunny and super wet when its raining.
A simple common sense will basically save your life. First, its never a place for 13 year olds and under. (at least)
If you want the beach, go direct via the bancas from brgy, pundaquit. If you wanna climb your way to the cove... do it without the rain.
The heat problem you can solve with ample supply of water. But a bad weather problem (rain/typhoon).. goodluck.
To sum it up.. the trail itself is easy.
But the high figure of "incidents" should tell us something. Its not a vacation place and itll never be. So be safe.
We were with Anna that day. Our group had a different itinerary, we demanded that we hike ng sunday morning. They went up ng mga past 1pm (saturday afternoon) from Anawangin cove.
Maaraw naman nung umalis sila ng Anawangin, but an hour later umulan na ng malakas.
I really hope makita na sila. Let's continue to pray for them.
Hi, I was part of the group that went to Zambales with Anna. She's our tour guide representing Philippines 101 Travel & Tours (alidr.multiply.com). It was unfortunate this happened to her and her neice. Them seemed really nice people. My group didn't go with them on the hike because we requested to change our itinerary. We can't help but think it would've been us if we didn't change it.
When the incident happened, we were all shocked but some locals claimed that this had happened a lot of times in the past already. I really really hope that something will be done to STOP this - letting people tour around a place that could be seriously dangerous pala. Sana kung may warning signs man lang or restrictions sa oras ng pagstart ng hike or age restrictions sa participants ng hike. Pero wala. We all thought it was a walk in the park at babalik rin sila nung gabi. :(
Their group left around 2PM. Sunny pa nga nun. Pero some locals claim hiking after lunch is never a good idea if the hikers don't intend to stay overnight kasi nga umuulan madalas sa bundok 'pag hapon-gabi. :(
I know what happened is an act of nature but even so, sana may maimplement na na kahit anong measure (from the local governement and travel and tours companies) to lessen the chances of something like this happening again.
I really do pray that Anna and Jessielou will be found soon. To their relatives and family, please be strong.
We'll Hope in due time and in God's Will Mahanap na ung mga missing persons, The Mountenaineering families irrespective of Affiliation and groups i think are somewhat affected by this untoward incident like this. At first, when i saw glimpse of the spectacular view that Anawangin could offer, wow!!! para kang nasa ibang lugar, but then Mails, news and expereinces of other who have been there keep on pouring on the things that had happened, true experiences on how bad this place is in terms of and in time Emergencies i doubt if you'll a second thought going again at this place. We'll pwde naamng sanang iwasan but with of course coordination with people behind this place especially to the concerned municipality. So it happened..it will happened again and again. At this point , we need to pray for thier safety, hope for the miracle 'cause miracle happens. And hope when hope comes to end for thier safety, hope di na din mauulit. Yes its an adventure , yes its thrilling but guys SAFETY FIRST.

Hi Gid, my club has joined the search but unfortunately our team there had nothing substantial to report today.
AMCI was in Pundaquit just a little over two months ago to donate search and rescue equipment as our way of thanking the community for their help in recovering the bodies of three of our members and friends who were killed under similar circumstances last year.
It was our hope then that the equipment would rot unused in their big wooden box at the barangay hall. Alas, this was not what happened.

gumagalang,
gilbert
naalala ko that time may members ng AMCI may kasmang mga mga 80+ kids ages 10 to 15 years old sa anawangin friday afternooon sila umalis ng pundaquit,,, mga elementary ata yug mga yung from laguna,,, buti nalang walang nangyari sa mga bata inulan din sila during trek gabi na nakadating sa anawangin,,
This is a tragedy. There is no point in blaming anyone else for this matter. No matter how prepared you are, circumstances will still occur. What we can actually do now is to pray for their immediate safety & that they will return alive & well.
As far as I know my Lord Jesus Christ is mighty to save them both. I entrust their lives into His hand.
hi sir gid.
my contact in bgy. pundaquit told me (thru sms) that as of yesterday, september 7, 2009, 9am, that the 2 mountaineers were still alive and were found in the vicinity of bgy. angeles, an adjacent village of pundaquit. the area is within the periphery of mt. mabanban, and based on the accounts of the two, they were lost in the area in trying to scout for alternative trails to go back to pundaquit and avoid the rampaging river. luckily, they still have food provisions which made them survive the ordeal.
@ anonymous: that's a good news to hear. =)
thanks for this update. sana nga. indeed, to quote my sources, "yon naman ang kumakalat na balita dito."
however, my source added that "pero nung nagtanong ako khapon sa brgy opisyal dito ay dipa naman daw nakkta ung 2 babae na naanod."
so far we have not received official word from the local officials or the SAR teams regarding the status of the missing persons. let us hope for the best.

It is inform that 3 of its passengers were members of Iloilo based mntrs adventurers.
Sana wala cla sa 9 na patay.Hope ma-account na lahat ng rescued duon.
Why is this all happening to us?..
I was at San Antonio last September 18 to 20. Our boatman (who was part of the rescue team) along with Nagsasa Cove's caretakers said that the operation already ceased a few days back. Bodies weren't found.
hi!im Leo Capili husband ni anna at pamangkin q c jessie lou n mga nawala sa anawangin san antonio, zambales! aug. 29 that was our 10th year aniversary ng asawa q at im working in kuwait! last tex nya skin is nsa tuktok n sya ng bundok at sna daw ksma nya aq at grit nya aq ng happy aniversary! lam q msya sya dun kya d q sya tinetex at tintwgan. Maraming Salamat s mga dasal at panalangin nyo!!!!
Just want to comment on the srarement of anoynymous about the LGU/Travel& tours regarding warning signs...Pundaquoit is an open mountain, lahat ng gusto umakyat pwede.ang lgu hindi nagrerequire ng fees etc for mountaineers pero lately after those incidents,nagput-up cla ng registration for free just 4 monitoring. Why would people go to a place withou consulting the locals kasi?Tapos maninisi..
we have local guides pero may mga assuming talagang mga mountaineers na ayaw sumunod sa advices ng mga locals. From the trail itself makikita mo naman agad yung dangers ng area.
rain, the way you wrote your comment, ikaw ang parang naninisi.
i and my group also headed to anawangin right before the incident took place then after 2 weeks we heard about it. as assesment to anawangin talagang binibisita ng ulan ang lugar lalo na pag gabi and thats the hardest part. so ung mga balak pumunta they really really have to be prepared. the place is really nice babalik pa rin nmn ako dun. ingat lang.

please continue to pray for the 2 mountaineers that was missing...sana matagpuan na sila. The family needs them.GOD HELP US.
Ask ko lang po, is there any update on how's Anawangin now? Is it safe to go there in the next few weeks?
Thanks po!
I am very sorry for those poor mountaieers but even though some unexpected accidents happen that does not mean we should stop going there we should just be extra careful in anawangin or hiking to anawangin or whatever you just got to be Xtra careful
anawangin is beautiful, its a place you can go to as many times as you want and discover something new. its a quiet place were you can bond with nature. anawangin has tons of different areas from a forest to the beach. hiking to or in the area is also fun but it may take some time. the area has a river, mountains, waterfalls, beach, and another beach separated by the mountain, this beach has tons of shells and stuff to hike there takes about 20 min but you can just ride a boat to there if you want.
if you want a safe, enjoyable, fast and quiet boat trip or if you want to hike in anawangin (like to the waterfall Megan’s beach and stuff),
or from pundaquit to anawangin which takes a devastating 3 hours (depends on how you hike), and the best part is if you don’t feel like hiking back from anawangin to pundaquit you can just ask for a boat there contact:
: 09208289226 look for Arnold Brigaste
: 09392786484 look for Lizel Presente,
the price is 300peso pp for the trip and back (ask for prices to hike). they also rent tents and snorkels which is awesome if you forget them. and if you forget something just ask them they might be able to have it like a torch or even a cooler with ice. there’s even a useful a store there were you can buy stuff like drinks.
I Highly Recommend Them!!!
