Everything set for Annual Amputee Climb on Saturday

Everything is going ahead as planned for the Annual Amputee Climb - the first-ever in the Philippines. I would like to thank our partners - SMART Communications, Physicians for Peace, and the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity for making this event possible. Let us pray for good weather and a safe, successful climb on Saturday for climbers and amputees alike.

The Climb Secretariat has already emailed a primer to all participants who have confirmed. Please read the instructions carefully so that our itinerary will run smoothly. For further inquiries please email amputee.climb@gmail.com or contact Marcus, Climb Secretariat, at 09273851191.

Note: The news clipping on the right is from Philippine Star, page B7, November 26, 2009.

are the team leaders newbies? were they reminded the what the goal of the climb is? isn't to assist the amputee's rather than overtaking them just to take pictures/videos of themselves or the hike. also why is it the sweeper who carries the med kit at the front enjoying and no where to be found when one of the amputee's it already tolerating pain due to muscle stress. after reaching the summit only few assisted the amputee's to go down. was it only for the credits? at the last stop over, the itinerary was not followed due to the late comers from breaks. overall it was a fun for the first annual amputee climb. kudos to the amputees!

all the participants of the activity are supposed to assist the amputees, not just the team leaders. most of the time we had to concern ourselves with "behind the scenes" matters, such as accounting, contacting sponsors who wish minute-by-minute updates, etc. personally i had to rush my descent in order to attend to a medical emergency involving one of the participants.

to say or suggest that it was "only for the credits" is unfair. the organizers took a lot of risk by agreeing to organize such a climb for amputees; and to ensure their fitness, we engaged the amputees in months-long training consisting of lung function tests and exercises and screened them properly. the fee we collected from participants was barely enough to finance the whole climb including the amputees' expenses, and we had to arrange for sponsors and we're thankful for SMART for supporting the climb.

after all these behind the scenes work that took months, i think the organizers deserved some fun moments during the climb. the documentation part of the climb was very important because the purpose of the climb is to encourage amputees to realize that they can do beyond the usual routine. thus we tried to get whatever publicity we can get.

of course no climb is perfect and no man is perfect; i know that we encountered a lot of problems including glitches in the itinerary. feedback is surely welcome in this. try to understand our position also. i ask the participants to focus on the positive in this climb. we were able to accompany four amputees on top of a mountain. we will keep doing so and i hope mountaineers will continue supporting us in the future.

i would like to ask the participants to keep the comments constructive. gideon and the organizers did a superb job, but of course there is always room for improvement. they even handed out a survey form on our way home, for the purpose of soliciting our opinion regarding the climb. at the end of the day, we are all mountaineers, regardless or being participants or organizers. let us focus on the fact that it was a successfull climb, as the amputees did reach the summit and we all made it home. congratulations to the organizers, the amputees and to all of us!
