Roger Guzman
1975-2010
I've always wanted to feature Mang Roger in this website, considering his important role as the transportation contact for Mt. Pulag. He was the driver of choice in all our Cordillera mountain trips. Personally I've made arrangements for more than a dozen jeepneys from this guy and not once did they fail us.
When I joined the PALMC Bakun Trio climb last year, I got a chance to talk to him more. He personally drove our group all the way to Bakun, and, as part of the package, he had to stay the whole 4 days that we were there. I asked him, "Don't you get bored, waiting for us?" He told me that he was also enjoying it; "Masarap gumala," was his reply, adding that he really loved to drive, ever since he was a teenager. Perhaps for him it was an adventure in itself, traversing all those long and winding roads-less-traveled, seeing the mountaineers clad in their outfits, excited, free-spirited, joyful.
How did it all begin? He recalls a group of mountaineers approaching him in the jeepney terminal in Baguio City, as he was waiting for his turn. It was the summer of 2001. They asked him if his jeepney can make it to Mt. Pulag; they have tried others but they were disappointed. The intrepid Roger gamely agreed to take them to Mt. Pulag Ranger Station; the mountaineers were pleased, and for the next decade he became a familiar face to all of us.
That is why he was considered a friend of mountaineers: he did not just take us to the jumpoff; he was part of our expeditions. It was important for him to take us to the jumpoff, in the same way that it was important for us to reach the summit. His cell number is in every mountaineering club's phonebook. And even when the oil prices rose, he held fast with his mountaineer-friendly rates that made Pulag accessible on a weekend.
Unfortunately his good relationship with mountaineers was viewed by some with envy, and the last time we met, in April 2010, he expressed concern about some people who wish him ill. I remember during the 1st PinoyMountaineer Charity Climb in 2009, before we parted at the Victory Terminal in Baguio, he said, "Sir, salamat sa kabuhayan."
Kabuhayan! This man was earning his keep humbly and with integrity. Though an Ibaloi, he offered free transportation to the Kalanguyas in Babadak and he gladly brought the sick people to the hospitals in Baguio when needed. If he had raised the jeepney prices for Mt. Pulag, we wouldn't really complain because we trust him and he virtually had a monopoly and yet he stuck with his friendly rates, just enough for his family.
For such a good man to be killed in his own town in La Trinidad, mercilessly, is such a atrocious offense and the mountaineering community strongly condemns it. He was at the prime of his life and if not for this evil deed, he might have been still around to take our children to the beautiful mountains.
Sorrow reigns today but very soon, justice is something we must clamor for. The killer, and those behind his death, must be punished. And we must make sure that if they do exist, those who sought to profit from Mang Roger's demise will not have the morbid satisfaction of getting what they want. We look forward to Roger's nephew, family, and associates continuing his jeepney service. They are the worthy inheritors of the reputation and relationship that Roger has built with us.
Manong Roger, you will be well remembered. A good man, a reliable driver, a great friend of mountaineers.
This eulogy was read by Raniel Guzman, nephew of Mang Roger, during the funeral service in La Trinidad, Benguet, July 29, 2010. Photo taken in September 2009 in Bakun, Benguet.

OMG!! (teary eyed) May you rest in peace Kuya Roger.. and for the killer.. may your conscience wont let you sleep as for what you did to a g0od man with a good heart. True.. Kuya Roger will forever be remembered..!!
wow.. I thought I never communicated him during our Mt. Pulag climb but when u said his cell number was in every mountaineer's phone, I checked mine and suddenly my hair raised having found out that I saved his number. Although we never met him personally, he was the one who arranged our transportation during our hike. we share the same feelings of the mountaineering community. this is truly a great loss for all of us. may you find your peace wherever u are, mang roger. kudos to you!

Rest in peace Kuya Roger.. We hope you get justice for this brutal death. Just thinking about your pink jeepney makes me sad and I hope you are well wherever you are.
SANA KAHIT PAANO IN OUR OWN LITTE WAY MAGBIGAY TAYO SA NAIWAN NA PAMILYA NYA...
see u to the nxt world ka'roger... R.I.P
I'm part of one of the last groups (probably the last) that Kuya Roger took to the Ranger Station of Mt. Pulag. We went to Pulag last July 17-18, 2010. I was the one who coordinated with Kuya Roger from our group, and given that, we talked ...a lot these past days. Even after our climb, I still call/text him to ask questions re Pulag which he always answered generously. We just talked over the phone a few days before he died. When I got the news that he was dead, I felt mixed emotions --- shock, goose bumps, sadness, "panghihinayang", and anger for the person who killed him. I even called his number to confirm because I still can't believe that he was gone just like that and his nephew (whom we have met when we were in Pulag) answered Kuya Roger's phone and confirmed his death.
As my friend puts it, Pulag ride will never be same again. We will miss Kuya Roger so much, his crazy antics and his "hirits". We will miss his friendliness, his cheerful disposition and his personality's "chemistry" with ours. I'm really grateful and thankful that I've met Kuya Roger and been part of his life even for just a short while. I really hope and pray that justice will be served and the one who did this will get what he deserved! We are behind you Kuya Roger in every step of the way. May your soul rest in peace and we thank you for everything and for becoming part of our journey.
Mang Roger, paalam at wish you well sa biyahe nyo sa kabilang buhay. May you reach higher summits in His arms.
I'm happy that once in my life, nakasakay ako sa pink na jeep nyo. Rest in peace and sana mabigyan ng hustisya ang pagkawala nyo.
Yes, kuya Roger...you will always be remembered!!!
To the author of this blog (sir Gid) and to those who gave their supports and comments, we sincerely thank you....Everything that was said about him were true...isa siyang maalalahanin at mabait na tao hindi lang bilang pinsan at kuya, kundi bilang isang kaibigan....naisip ko nga, nasa bokabularyo kaya niya ang salitang maramot??? kasi maraming beses na kaming humingi ng pabor sa kanya at parating ang sagot ay "sige, okay lang" kahit mapa simpleng bagay man....
We love you so much and I thank God naging parte ka ng buhay namin!!!!
I feel saddened of Mang Rogers sudden death. It is unacceptable for a good man like him to end up dead just like that because of jealousy and greed.
He the one of the best person I have ever met. He is not like any other locals that view mountaineers as a milking cow he is just and kind.
I rode his jeepney twice few years ago the road back then was a rough ride since roads are not yet fully cemented. Every ride to mountain was safe with him. It felt really bad because we were have plans of climbing Mt.Pulag this year unfortunately the ride to pulag will never be the same again. I just hope his family and will maintain the jeepney service and let's make sure that all of us mountaineers we'll only avail jeepney service from Mang Roger's family so to who ever instigated the killing of this very good man will not benefit from his departure...
We will miss you Mang Roger..YOu will always be remembered...

thanks Sir Gid for this blog.. I remember his face now.. sya yung driver nung Friendship Climb nung April 17-18,2010. We are planning to climb Mt. Pulag this year ulit and I hope we could get a driver as kind and humble as Mang Roger.. It will never be the same though..:(..

My planned return to Pulag's summit will never be the same again.
I am so saddened to know that Roger left our world, he was a good person. So dearly missed and praying to God Almighty to receive Roger in his arms and send comfort to his family. I am hoping that justice will be given to the people left behind mourning his passing.
Roger, cousin, childhood playmate,... you are such a good friend, a truely humble man. He is a man with an awesome world vission of human family.
Roger's quest includes selfless service to his passengers, and a passionate man with his feet firmly on the ground.

Kasi after 9 pm di na nya ako sinagot sa quotes joke that i send to him,...

To sir Gid: THANK YOU so much for having this blog. to all acquaintances of our brother ROGER, we THANK YOU so much for your love and concern for him, it is so very painful losing our brother that acceptance is so difficult to undertake, but during his wake when many people come and proudly speak of what and who ROGER was to them; of what he has done with humility, love and concern to them, made us more burst in tears, which to me is a reality and reminded me of GOD's goodnes, the curse, hatred in my heart was overpowered by love for it was what Roger wants, as what was revealed in their testimonies. Yes, no matter how painful it was in losing him, May God's plan/will be done, for sure God has a good purpose and plan to everyone who loves Roger, to his family for allowing this to happen. Am so proud, gratefull and thankfull to God for having brother Roger who lifted our family with his good deeds and works. WE LOST ROGER PHYSICALLY BUT HE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED IN OUR HEARTS AND MIND. To his emmediate family uncle and auntie MAY GOD BLESS YOU FOR NUTURING ROGER A GOOD MAN.
To the culprit, what now??? Are you happy??? jumping with happiness for you successfully put Roger to death, which in return making our hearts Bleed in pain and arousing our minds with anger? God is truly good and faithfull, for in His goodness and faithflnes that we lean on, and we do believe and hope in God's judgement that Roger's family will achieve the justice for we lift it up to our Almighty Father in heaven who will do the vengeance for Roger's death for as what God said "VENGEANCE IS MINE FOR THOSE WHO LOVES ME".
i've read all your comments and, late as it may be, i would like to include mine.i see that, somehow, he has been part of your life.i am not a mountaineer but my sister is and she explains to me how important a well coordinated transportation to the jump off is to a climb.
Roger and I were classmates in high school.i remember his easy smile.looking at his picture posted here, he hasn't changed that much.i remember he has the best maintained bike in school; metal polish, well greased bearings, washed tires and all...seldom, or not at all, would he complain if i run off with his bike without asking pemission.last time i think that we saw each other was graduation day.and now this sad news.

to sir Gid thanks for the blog.
From the articles that I've read he's found his calling, followed it and worked on it with purpose. He loved doing what he did - serving others. 'wish we all find our calling and have the heart to service. You guys had the privilege to have met him. Be proud ..and pray for the family he left behind.
My Uncle Roger’s smile is the freshest memory of him remaining in my mind. May you find comfort in God’s arms. You’re the man. He’s really a good man!
I strongly wish justice for my Uncle would finally get its due.
rest in peace,friend..ill never forget all those days na nagkulitan, nagkwentuhan tau,ill treasure all those moments..
bayaw, wherever u are you may rest in peace... hope and pray justice will be given to you soon.. a forever guilt of conscience to the one who did this to you.. i tell you they will never succeed in this life forever. to those who give concern, tnx & godbless...

Good bye to you my friend.. thanks for assting me for my past 8 expeditions in pulag.. ill will never forget the moments with you, you even teach me how to speak kankanai..
If the killing is all about envy or they want to bein the shoe of mang roger.. from now on i will no longer hire jeep going to pulag instead ill just ride the typical bus going to the jump off..
In behalf of SBMS we would like to thank you for all the things you have done to us, im sure your in a happy place now and i will see you up there Sir..
im out...
Sad news! Mang Roger also drove pAsAwAy Outdoor Group and Amkor Technology Philippines Mountaineers to Pulag before on separate years... I had changed my mobile phones and sims numerous times but I still kept his contact # until now... we will miss you Mang Roger, RIP... hope your family get the justice you deserved...
RIP the greatest mountaineer transporter in the Philippines :(
I always sat infront w/ Mang Roger everytime we travel to Pulag. And everytime i say "what the??..nandito na tayo?ambilis ah....Not because he turn his pink jeepney to a rally car & jumps at a 160kph on that dirt road going to the Ranger stn. But bec he had a lot of very intresting things to say & lots of stories to tell. You will barely notice the 4-5hrs travel time going there believe me.
...I guess climbing Mt. Pulag w/out Mang Roger will never be the same again. Dunno bout you but for me Pulag minus Mang Roger is not a complete Pulag experience. We'll be climbing Mt. Pulag again this year, this time to pay homage, and a tribute climb. Our way of saying thank you to the man who touched many of us.
RIP Mang Roger, you will be missed.
Saturday evening, time to refresh my mind from work,I was in our apartment w/ my friends and so happened that Jeff opened up ur last txt/msg to me at siya ung nkabasa dhil sa signing error s chikka where u used to send me msgs.Biniro nla ako dun sa tawagan ntin ng mama/pa but just ignored them coz that's we used to call each other.
Back to work sunday evening,t'was mid-night there,sa situation ng alaga ko dko napapansin kung ano ung nararamdaman ko.T'was past 12 am of monday here, past 5 am philippine time,I got off to bed when Delly called me and asked me if I talked to you and I answered NO..then she told me u're already dead accdg to the msg from her brother.OMG I was totally shocked and didn't react at all.I felt mixed emotions na para akong patay buhay and didn't believe that t'was you.
Monday morning here, didn't know what to do. I didn't even entertain some calls from my friendsbcoz of the situation of my work too.
Ganunpaman,I'll treasure all the sad and happy moments natin.
Missed a lot your txt/msgs pa w/ the word mama that you used to send and tell me everytime we had our conversation and vise versa for me to call u pa. Till now I kept calling you pa at yan lagi ýong word na hinahanap mo sa mga txt ko.Again, you're always have a place in my heart till we meet again..LOVE AND MISS YOU SO MUCH!!..
Alam ko masaya ka na sa kinaroroonan mo ngayon for I know that you're in GODS hands..May you REST IN PEACE!
To the person and those who are involved cause you to death, may they deserved more than what they did to you for God is always with those who have good heart, good mind, good actions...
You'll be loved and missed especially your family too!!

di ko pa nakakasasama si Mang Roger pero I feel the mountaineer's grief. Rest in peace po Mang Roger. Your legacy in Mount Pulag would be remembered.
I apologize for not giving updates to some mountain climbers and friends of Roger who had been texting me about his death last July 27, 2010. At the time, I was traumatized that I cannot give details objectively for the past days. I felt I had lost a shoulder in this lifetime. Some climbers were crying with us too especially the family who lost their beloved Roger.
On the night of the 26th, we spent the whole night at the Baguio General Hospital with some of his family and relatives praying for God to extend his life and rushing to prepare his meds and other necessities.Dawn of 27th, he passed away. I thank God for giving me the privilege of talking and holding him before he was rushed to the operating room while his sisters were rushing to the hospital. Thanks to Gina Epi who called and informed me then who was a relative and friend of Roger who was in Ambangeg.
Based on information gathered, he knew the guy who shot him. While he was talking with him in their gate, a gun man shot him with a 45 caliber 3 times but 2 bullets entered his body. One of his kidneys was damaged, his pancreas was raptured, the artery to his kidney was damaged that made him loss a lot of blood then. His stomach was also injured.
At one time, we were talking about death whereby I told him if somebody is a victim of a hit-and-run or murder and you happen to transport him, the first thing you have to ask the dying person is the name of the assailant or any clue. Truly, when it happened to him, he mentioned the name of one of the suspects before he was given full medical attention. We know the guys behind his murder.
Unknown to many, Roger Guzman has studied Computer at AMA after finishing his schooling in Seamanship. He told me about his plan before to leave the country for greener pastures but his good family dissuaded him. They want to be with him. He is the youngest of 11 children.
On closer observation, he had good leadership skills with a compassionate and humble heart even to strangers and those who have betrayed him. His attributes caught my attention. He was down-to-earth, big-hearted and courteous. The mark of a true leader is how he/she treats strangers who cannot repay him/her for the good deeds. This qualifies him to be trusted to escort visitors and guests in the park.
His jitney was always neat and well-conditioned too. I did never hear any complain about the condition of his jitney. Most of the problems were minor and expected on the rough roads.
He would return all left items in his jitney. Cell phones, bonnets, tents, jackets, wallets intact. He would even go to the extent of returning them to the terminal or mailing them to the owners.
Unknown to many, he had been helping the Kalanguyas of Babadak and nearby communities during his trips to the park. He would get their orders (medicines, LPG, rice, etc.) and bring them back to them when he comes back to the community. He would also get the money entrusted by parents for their children in La Trinidad and Baguio City for their allowances or tuition without any fee including their rations.
He would also rush patients to the distant Dennis Molintas Municipal Hospital in Daclan or in Baguio City or La Trinidad for free most of the time. He would transport students from Babadak to Ambangeg or to La Trinidad and Baguio City with the mountain climbers or when he has no back load. He would also feed them before sending them off with free rides. At times, he was reported to bring home some of his passengers from Babadak to spend the night with them in their home.
I also observed that most of the girls/boys from Babadak would prefer to ride with him when there are other drivers with him who could shuttle them from the community to their destination. Even their orders, they would prefer him to get their orders. At times, I have to ride with his other drivers to pave way for the others though at times I need to discuss some updates with him.
At one time, a girl rode midway from Babadak to Ambangeg, somewhere in Palanza. She clang at the back of Roger's jitney covertly and jumped at Log Deck in Ambangeg at the wrong time when Roger accelerated his driving. She had contussions and bruised faced. Roger rushed her to the Dennis Molintas Hospital and then transported her to the Baguio General Hospital for medical attention. I had assisted him then for he was so troubled even when it was not his fault. He paid all the bills, gave allowances to the girl's watcher/sister and made sure she got the follow up check ups and shuttled her home to Abucot when she was fully discharged.
We also offered prayers together joining hands for the fast recovery of the girl then. Roger, his buddy, 2 of my nieces were in my apartment with me helped in praying during that night for the girl. We were also worried that the people in the area will do something bad after the incident then. Truly, some of the green-eyed guys allegedly were influencing the family to file a case against Roger but the girl and her sister did not listen to the proddings of the guys.
When I was having problems on the security of the Visitors' Center Cash Room, he volunteered to pay for the grills of the window to deter the reported robbers, thieves and bulglars in the area then. He knows that the office is having financial problems. He also donated cement for the sink at the Visitors' Center. Oh so many thing to mention but not enough space.
When the Kalanguyas in Babadak would ask for pulutans or for gin he would reportedly willingly give without my knowledge. This was reported by his fellow drivers. He would also buy food-for-work for the road maintenance or donate cash for the work. Unknown to many, he would haul sand and gravel in sacks and place them on the humpy roads to Babadak to contribute to the road maintenance.
He would also offer the DENR Officers lesser charter fees for he knows the state of the government. We would often pay him at a later date.
One time he asked me if what if they will kill me knowing that there are death threats attached to my crucial job. In fact, I cheated death twice. I told him I am prepared to die for the next life is far better that this temporary world. I have committed myself to Jesus Christ. We are just foreigners and travelers in this materialistic land. If it is my time to go, I have to go. We have different life clocks and we are not here by accident but we are here on a mission and our life was planned before we were even born.
I was thankful that I had the opportunity to share the word of God to him. In fact, during his last days, he would always mention his trust to God. I thought that I might go ahead of him but I was wrong.
If only I can trade my life to him, I would have offered my life in exchange to his so he can continue the good works he started. The righteous will not be forsaken but be remembered always.
Shocked is understatement! My God cant believe hes been killed. We just had our climb last June 19-20 and my friend Judith who is in contact with him introduced Mang Roger to us.Hes very nice man. Zarah and I gave the used battery to him coz according to he can still use it for 2 or 3 days.I never thought that would be the last conversation.Mang Roger you will always be remembered.Though we just met once but I know a good person in you.RIP

"he mentioned the name of one of the suspects before he was given full medical attention. We know the guys behind his murder."
....this is definitely good news to me. Thank you Ma'am Mering for this update. Finally justice will be served soon.

we all demand justice for manung roger.. we all hope for justice to be served ASAP... to all mountaineers, pls stay with his mountain guide jeep, the pink jeep he used before to transport visitors to the park and now being manage by his older brother charlie... there are many new jitneys now being used to carry visitors to mt pulag so pls stay with manong charlie to really help manong roger... u might be misled by the commissioner of this crime so pls stay with manong charlie...remember, no judgment yet for the suspect of this crime and they are pressumed innocent by the law until proven guilty...who knows, one of the new jeeps now is the real perpetrator of this crime..so pls stay with manong charlie...just a reminder frm the tourist guide in the area
I've been here in Japan for 2 and half year. It was only now I've learned about Mang Roger's demise.
