Partial list of mountains affected by Typhoons 'Ondoy' and 'Pepeng'

UPDATE (10/19/09): Roads to Mt. Pulag and Tabayoc now open; most mountains back to normal.

Based on our personal correspondences and news reports, the following mountains are currently affected (damaged trails, devastated communities, OR impeded access) I am currently on community immersion in San Juan, Batangas and I only have sporadic internet access. Please help me with information by commenting on this post.

DISCLAIMER: These tidbits go only to the best of my knowledge. Most are second-hand information and should at best be advisory. I hope this helps:

Mt. Batulao - okay but muddy
Mt. Romelo - okay but muddy
Mt. Arayat - flooded slopes
Mountains in Tarlac
Bakun Trio - Halsema still unstable
Mt. Pinatubo - still under repair yung trail

Please be guided accordingly.

PS: Fortunately, we have not received news of any mountaineering-related accidents during the onslaught and aftermath of Typhoons 'Ondoy' and 'Pepeng'.

Sir Gid,

We're planning a day hike this Saturday in Mt. Talamitam... any update on its trail? Is it safe to climb?

There has been report that 4 bridges leading to the mountain were damaged by Typhoon Ondoy... how true is it?

Thanks!

thanks.

@zutil:
mt. talamitam is okay. ted calimag (caretaker) just texted me as follows:

gud pm ho sir okay naman ang mt.talamitam walang damage, liban nlng sa ibang
area na may 3 guho pero malayo sa trail...ang naapektuhan ay ang mga tao
dahil 5 na tulay ang inanod ni ondoy. pero ung tulay sa talamitam inayos
na namin sa pakikipagtulungan ng barangay.

@edge:
thanks for this, will add pico.

@prodigy:
anawangin is okay. contact mang alfring to make sure the waves are calm and just make sure you do the regular precautions.

the damage to our mountains is still less compared to milenyo which damaged a lot
of mountains including makiling and tarak ridge.

state of the mountains:

manabu, malipunyo, daguldul are fine

makiling is in okay although medyo masukal ung traverse trail as it has not been climbed recently. be careful with melkas ridge.

kalisungan and cristobal are okay

sembrano is also good.

batulao - still quite muddy but otherwise climb-able

marami - honestly i have no idea. di ko na nakakatext si konsehal

pinatubo, arayat - still defer

benguet mountains - halsema still closed so goodbye for now bakun, singakalsa. pulag is also still inaccessible at the moment (unless you plan an amnbaguio trail)

mt. ugo looks okay esp. from the vizcaya side

visayas and mindanao mountains are wide open

sir

pls post some update on pico de loro

tnx po!!!!

Anonymous said...

sir gid, na-contact ko si kuya roger kahapon regarding the status of mt. pulag.
ang sabi niya, okay na akiki hanggang jump-off. problema ang tawangan dahil hanggang tabeo lang pwede. i'm guessing okay na din akyatin ang tabayoc dahil dito.
more power to you sir!

sir gid,
i have a cousin who usually guide mountaineers in mt. makiling coming from the the sto. tomas, batangas side. he told me that since last september, power/fuel company chevron paid a hefty amount to the local government (barangay) in exchange for a policy of not allowing mountaineers to climb the mountain from the batangas side. i hope we can do something to know the facts and act accordingly.
thanks.

gideon said...

i just talked to ma'am mereng of pulag. oo binukas na daw hanggang akiki unfortunately the opening just lasted for two days, sinara na ulit. pero mukha namang magiging stable na ung daanan soon...for now sarado parin ang pulag but please check with roger kasi nga pabago-bago.

i heard that pico de loro is now okay for climbing.

thank you for the tip about makiling's sto. tomas side. will ask the MCME director about this and will post updates.

ugo - some parts of itogon are badly hit by the storms. hindi ko matawagan si ma'am liza; pls. verify with her if you're planning an ugo climb.

thanks guys for your updates! let us continue praying and helping our brethren who were affected by the storms.

both trail po ba ng pico are ok??? nasugbu nor ternate???

regarding climbs for a cause -- the cordillera would be a good target for this. i mentioned the possibility to ma'am mereng of pulag and she says it would be good, once the roads have been repaired.

i think pico is clear on both sides/

Sir may updates po ba for Anawangin via Mt. Pundaquit? Is it safe already? The last post about it was on the 2 mountaineers lost and found in pundaquit...

We're planning to go there this weekend...

salamat

gideon said...

hi rhovee okay na ang pulag accdg to ma'am mereng, let's hope that this new typhoon will not cause damage so this will be sustained.

anawangin is also okay but absolutely avoid it if weather is bad. and make sure your guides are aware of what to do in times of emergency.
