Mountain News: Roger Guzman of Mt. Pulag, shot dead last night

MANILA – According to multiple sources, Roger Guzman, known to everyone in the mountaineering community as Mang Roger, was shot dead in La Trinidad as he was on his way from the Ranger Station. We do not have confirmation of other details yet at the moment. His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010.

In an unpublished interview with PinoyMountaineer.com last year in Bakun, Benguet, Mang Roger related to us how he started becoming a driver for Mt. Pulag in the 1990s, when he became the choice driver of mountaineers going to Mt. Pulag, because of his reliable service and powerful jeepneys. “Nakatambay lang ako sa jeepney terminal ako sa Baguio…Nilapitan ako ng mga mountaineers kung kaya ba daw ng jeep ko na umakyat sa Pulag…” Since then, he was counted upon by hikers visiting not only Mt. Pulag but also other mountains in the region.

In April 2010, Mang Roger shared to us that some sectors are ‘jealous’ of what they perceive to be a lucrative business of ferrying hikers back and forth Mt. Pulag. We do not know if this is related to his untimely and shocking death. Regardless of who the perpetrator of this crime is, the mountaineering community should join the demand for justice for Mang Roger.

to the family of manong roger, condolences… Sa lahat ng mountaineers, pls stay with manong charlie, the mountain guide jeep being used by manong roger before… xa lang sana ang kontakin nyo pag pupunta kau d2 samin… we are all crying for justice to manong roger but it seems that most of the mountaineering club are leaving manong roger… madami na bumibiyahe saming iba iba jeep that is why i'm asking you to pls stay with the mountain guide jeep or to manong charlie just like sir mike abanes of the UP mountaineers… bhala na c kuya charlie kung ibibigay nya sa iba so long as u have done ur part…u might be mislead by the perpetrator and instead of helping manong roger, u r helping the perpetrator of this crime so pls stay with mountain guide jeep of manong roger…i'm a tour guide here in pulag so i have a closer look of what is going on in here…so please stay with mountain guide jeep..
