Hiking matters #196: Outdoor shops in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

After the successful Bukit Tabur dayhike, Deeno, Fuad and Uncle Ben, members of the Orang Gunung Kuala Lumpur (OGKL), toured me around some of the outdoor shops in the Kuala Lumpur Area. Here are the details we visited, with my comments:
1. Outdoor Centre Sdn Bhd
242-C Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur 50450, Wilayah Persekutuan
p: 603-42512548 f: 603-40512878
Comments: Heavy on rock climbing and mountaineering stuff -they even have ice axes and crampons! Reasonable prices, and many items are on discount.
2. UFL Outdoors
No.26, Ground Floor, Jalan Telawi 5, Bangsar Baru, 59100 KL.
Tel: 603-2282 5721 Fax: 03-2284 5721 Email : uflbangsar@yahoo.com
Comments: Mostly Coleman and Deuter products, so mostly for general hiking and camping needs. Check out their website for other branches.
3. Lafuma (YellowStone Sdn Bhd)
No.16, Jalan Telawi, Bangsar, 59100 Kuala Lumpur
Tel : 603-2287111 Fax : 603-22871119
Comments: I met the director, Mr. Ng Hock Soon, and he was very friendly and knowledgeable about gear. The variety of Lafuma and Millet stocks is pretty impressive. They are into the Malaysian hiking scene as well. Good prices for Millet and Lafuma.
42, Jalan SS2/24, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.
Tel: 603 7873 5560 Fax: 603 7873 5560
E-mail: info@mycorezone.com
Website: www.mycorezone.com
Comments: Two whole floors of gear! Probably the most extensive in terms of hiking and mountaineering, with many brands and offerings, but I think it’s a tad more expensive than the Lafuma (Yellowstone) outlet. Shopkeepers know their gear.
